Apparently the first few thousand refunds to one address weren't enough of a red flag.
If you add up just the returns cited in the article, that's $86,352,307 dollars to 53,994 people.

I have a similar situation in my family and while I'm a little nervous about Christmas this year (the TDS is getting worse), avoiding politics altogether is usually the safest course.
As others have mentioned, maybe try to find common ground in a shared hobby or interest?
Remember that they truly can't help themselves when they go on the attack (as with the "bUt He'S a CrImInAl" anecdote) and they will usually back off if you don't respond in an emotional manner.
