Covid is in the same general family of viruses as influenza, measuring between 0.1-0.2 μm. Bearing this in mind, remember N95 masks are only 95% effective down to .3 μm, and cloth masks are worse than that, some not capable of filtering out 1.0 μm particles. In California every year they would remind us that cloth masks are in effective against the wild fire some. Those particles are usually between 0.4-0.7 μm.

They don't filter anything, because when you breathe in, the air comes mainly from the gaps where air can easily come in - usually the 2 gaps on either side of your nose and then possibly 2 gaps at the side of the mask, depending on the dimensions of the mask.

The reason surgeons and doctors wear masks is so they don't spread germs to other people. Usually the germs are in thought to be inside droplets of saliva or bodily fluids ejected from the body when they talk or cough or sneeze.

But masks don't prevent you from getting the virus if it's already present in the air.
