Im sure the chinese on reddit are smart enough to not be so obvious and use a VPN. That probably explains the unaccounted traffic.

Reddit is one large CCP honeypot now. Its just sad seeing dumb woke kids fall into CCP trap so easily

harrison_bergeron 81 points ago +81 / -0

A VPN doesn't prevent traffic from being logged at all. It just changes the logged IP. That wouldn't leave any traffic unaccounted for, it would just potentially change the geographical mapping.

24
Pukeahontas 24 points ago +26 / -2

There are lots of ways to obfuscate traffic using VPN. With obfs4 proxies and tor, you can appear to access a website from shadow IP addresses that cannot be resolved definitively to a country.

34
harrison_bergeron 34 points ago +35 / -1

No IP can be resolved "definitively" to a geographic region. That's not a thing even with the IP address your ISP is assigning to you. It can be approximated loosely, but that's all based on leveraging some geo-IP database. It's never 100% accurate or precise.

I have no idea what you mean by "shadow" IP addresses. Tor addresses can absolutely be geo-located by the endpoint. That's true for literally every IPv4 address. If you are hitting a node on the IPv4 public network, you will necessarily have a source IP somewhere in the world. This is true of every Tor endpoint, every proxy endpoint, every VPN endpoint.

And even if what you're saying were true, your explanation would still never account for 40% of traffic.

Greg-2012 5 points ago +5 / -0

The average IT Tech knows more about the internet (TCP/IP) than Bill Gates or Steve Jobs.

3
Ragnar_Danneskjold 3 points ago +3 / -0

Or about computers in general. Steve Jobs and Bill Gates became who they were/are because Jobs was an excellent salesman who had ideas for products he knew people would want to buy and how to get them to want to buy them. He had other more capable people figure out how to make those products actually exist. And Gates was a shrewd and calculating businessman who knew how to tell the right mix of lies and truth to the right people at the right time. Neither were genius computer designers. They were both good at manipulating people, and that's what made them rich.

2
CelesteD 2 points ago +2 / -0

Bill Gates was also good at stealing other peoples intellectual property and patenting it himself. And it helps to be born into a rich family too.

This. You can change where the traffic is from, but you can't make 40% of it disappear. Either that traffic never existed and that 60% accounts for the 100%, or they purposely left out 40% of the traffic because it is in fact from somewhere they're trying to hide from the public. No doubt Alexa is in on it too, money goes a long way when it comes to changing numbers around.

1
Nonsensei 1 point ago +1 / -0

You're both overlooking a crucial factor: Alexa doesn't have precise measurements. It uses statistical averages based on a smaller sample size gleaned from some people's browsers and uses its algorithm to correct/estimate actual traffic.

https://winningwp.com/alexa-traffic-rank/

The data is collected from a subset of internet users using one of 25,000 browser extensions for either Google Chrome, Firefox and/or Internet Explorer. An algorithm then ‘corrects’ for various potential biases and attempts to compensate for visitors who may not be in Alexa’s measurement panel (a factor it hasn’t always tried to accommodate for) and normalizes the data based on the geographical location of visitors.

1
harrison_bergeron 1 point ago +1 / -0

I'm not overlooking anything. Not being able to account for 40% of all traffic is still a massive gap not explained by their data collection method.

1
Greg-2012 1 point ago +1 / -0

I have no idea what you mean by "shadow" IP addresses.

Maybe he means a spoofed IP. I haven't played around with TCP/IP in 20 years but back in the day, you could spoof IPs if you have root access on a name server.

1
harrison_bergeron 1 point ago +1 / -0

Spoofing an IP changes it. It doesn't make the IP invisible somehow.

Look, this is basic. If I have a server, you cannot contact my server without me being able to log the source IP. That doesn't mean that's the true originating IP of the client, but you will always be able to log the last hop. Always. There are no exceptions to this. You cannot send me a packet otherwise. There will be a source address on the packet. This is fundamental to the protocol.

2
permissible_missile 2 points ago +2 / -0

I've noticed a large uptick in "tech pedes" saying shit that makes us pedes who actually work in tech quite confused (aka they're blatantly full of shit). Unfortunately, it looks like it makes sense to people who have other areas of expertise.

Also yeah, there's no such thing as a "shadow IP" except in some possibly obscure and limited usage (not a general "hide my IP" kind of way).

Here's a pro tip guys: you can google any actual tech term and get a bazillion results. Try "tail call optimization". Notice how there are literally thousands of results for that concept? Now try "recursive descent parser". Equally obscure, right? But sure enough, you will receive thousands and thousands of results because this is actually a thing. Now try "shadow ip". You may get a result that appears relevant on first glance, but you will quickly start seeing completely irrelevant results, unlike the actual tech terms above. This is how you know that this is not a real term. Real terms absolutely flood the results with relevant results that all say basically the same thing.

NOTE: as I'm sure some of you are thinking, Google is not always reliable for everything, esp. anything political/cultural. But for tech stuff, they are on point. Same general rule goes for Wikipedia.

You think half of reddit's traffic is using proxies and tor? Most people have never even heard of tor

10
philandy 10 points ago +11 / -1

Most people have never heard of Reddit, either. ¯\(ツ)

6
riverc 6 points ago +6 / -0

2
--1-- 2 points ago +2 / -0

Also tor publishes all of their public exit nodes and they can be easily geolocated.

Titanium 6 points ago +6 / -0 (edited)

If you own the website and the network the user is connecting through, it is relatively easy to use heuristics of the traffic to correlate users on a site to the person connecting to the VPN. This is already available in firewalls which can detect applications/viruses using encrypted traffic.

A less covert, but far more effective way is to just start sending packets of specific sizes/timing in bursts and see where they show up in traffic from the VPN provider to suspect users in China.

Without access to both the site and the user's network, you can eventually locate people by monitoring latency and loss on the links you suspect the user is connecting through. I do this to identify people in video games to root out spies in my group and all I need is root access to our group's and user-level access to the enemy group's voice servers.

I really think the "missing traffic" just comes from a wide dispersal of low percentage countries. Say if you start at traffic from nation #4 is 4% and each subsequent nation is 93% of the traffic of the previous, you get the missing traffic you get to 100% by nation #27.

thedonald.win currently #1,162 in US sites

I think the "missing traffic" issue is easily explainable with just "the other countries just aren't shown in the unpaid-for presentation" but I could easily believe that tDw dropping out of the top 1,000 to 1,162 (99x to 1,162 is a pretty significant drop) is due to a concerted effort by a few Trump Derangement Syndrome zealots writing botnet scripts to generate traffic for whatever 100 sites are just ahead of and 100 sites just behind us. I don't think it is any stretch of the imagination that there are a dozen leftists just that rabid and petty that they would devote time and resources to "owning" tDw out of the top 1,000 thinking it would affect our collective morale.

2
harrison_bergeron 2 points ago +2 / -0

Yeah, it could very well have to do with the way they're reporting the data or, as others have pointed out, how they're collecting it. But it has nothing to do with "shadow IPs" or similar nonsense.

1
prof_robinson 1 point ago +1 / -0

Yes, but it is precisely the geographic mapping - and lack of geographically Chinese IPs - that the OP is citing. VPNs could explain some of it... but, frankly, that's a lot

1
harrison_bergeron 1 point ago +1 / -0

Except we know which IPs come from China. This is not a mystery.

1
prof_robinson 1 point ago +1 / -0

...until they use a VPN. Thats kinda the point

1
harrison_bergeron 1 point ago +1 / -0

Some of you are really embarrassing yourselves here. If you use a VPN so your source IP is not in China, then you're no longer using a China IP. See how that works? Also, did you know that's illegal in China?

There are blocks of IPs allocated to China we know which ones they are. Do you realize that your "point" holds for literally any client anywhere in the world?

7
JiggsawCalrissian 7 points ago +7 / -0

I dont think they're masking it, more like deliberately scrubbing/ massaging that information.

Whether or not its reddit or Alexa itself doing this remains to be seen but Alexa has no reason to lie afaik

I deleted my 11 year old Reddit account this summer. It became so painfully full of propoganda. Each post was either:

Black people doing something awesome.

Articles about church people all magically dying from Covid after defying lockdowns.

People not wearing masks getting harrassed.

White people getting beat up by black people.

Black people in the 60s and 70s being "Old School Cool"

"peaceful protestors" being harrassed by angry white people

Im sure Ill think of more

What you are suggesting is that there's 4 country in the world. The rest of the traffic doesn't come from China alone. This data seems incomplete at the very least, I would like to see the traffic from China but how much traffic is actually irrelevant since China has their hands in reddit administration.

3

How many years ago was it that Reddit stopped counting US military base traffic? What was the name of that base that were the top posters on Reddit? That information warfare unit?

Aha! It was Eglin Air Force base in Florida:

https://redditblog.blogspot.com/2013/05/get-ready-for-global-reddit-meetup-day.html

https://files.catbox.moe/4ldeyt.jpg

That's not the only one, there was another in the midwest that was responsible for a huge amount of Reddit traffic.

https://medium.com/@MKultrawoke/the-truth-about-the-alt-right-a-destruction-by-facts-and-logic-e3d07f27e8cb

Eglin Air Force Base is not just any air force base. For one thing, many of the projects there are funded and managed by D.A.R.P.A, who we will remember were instrumental in the creation of the internet itself, and have a long history of disturbing activities⁷⁸. In recent years Eglin Air Force base has been used to develop hyper-sonic weapons⁷⁹, and more damningly, several research papers are accredited to the airforce base. Many of these papers appear under the name of Eduardo L Pasilio JR. One such paper, entitled ‘Containment Control for a Social network with State-dependent Connectivity’⁸⁰, talks explicitly about the manipulation of social media users. Another one of his papers produced at Eglin Airforce base is entitled, ‘Model Based Learning of Information Diffusion On Social Media Networks’.Many of his other papers relate to systems and network theories⁸¹. Clearly then, intelligence agencies, in this case US intelligence agencies, are keenly interested in influencing these online spaces. Judging by their post history are very active in doing so.

One of the authors of the paper in that link that talks about the psyop is a Chinese national who was trained in the US but teaches at a Chinese university. What a clowncar our military has become.

I figure they are using botnet methods to secretly boost traffic for ad revenue, that is one of the only things that makes sense to me, seeing as their genuine traffic is decreasing at increasing rates. The company can defraud advertisers, so the important paychecks don't take a cut, until it's time to jump ship.

The reason why the DDOS attack doesn't increase our site rankings, is the same reason why they have missing traffic origins.
