Probably "both of these are beautiful"

When in reality they both have mental illness.

MedPede 135 points ago +135 / -0

Sadly, both of these 'people' are well known by too many - as Ana and Mia. The left is "Mia", the right is "Ana" - for the two demons, Bulimia and Anorexia, that people with eating disorders face. Self harm and suicidal ideation and attempts are frequent. I've had patients that were peeling their skin off because they had minor blemishes, yet didn't look twice at all the cutting scars on their arms.

If our schools taught classes in life management and coping skills instead of climate and race theory, half of our mentally ill would be able to lead normal lives. The American Dream isn't just about jobs and housing. People can turn their lives around for the better.

Happiness isn't a pie that we all have to divide into tiny pieces. It is a door at the top of many steps. We have to learn to climb those steps, but like learning to walk, we can accomplish it. If someone needs a ramp or an elevator to get to that door of happiness, therapy, self-help books, friends, family and God can give them the boost they need. Drugs and eating disorders won't get people to the door to happiness, they are just a trampoline where people get a brief glimpse before dropping back into depression.

Hey man, I’m writing a book literally designed to fix just that. I’ve noticed that everything I’ve read about life management is outdated these days due to the rapid rate that things are changing, plus no one wants to read books at all, let alone by old people. But I figured I’m still in my 20s, I’ve dealt with issues like that as a kid, I used to tear my face apart at pimples and try and prematurely pop them. I did shitty in school. Fucked around a lot. Been arrested twice and somehow managed to turn it all around and now I’m an executive at a pretty big medical office and run the lab as well. Anyways I’ve always followed a bunch of little rules I developed throughout life that helped me succeed no matter what (like you said. It’s not all about real restate and money) life thru at me. Finally started writing them down a couple weeks ago and I have about 50 Word pages already. Be happy to send you some of it if you think it’d help your patients in any way. Plus I’d love some professional feedback on it if that’s not too much to ask lol

Edit. Oh and the only reason I mentioned my background was cause I’ve been thru a lot of shit and I had no one to help me ever, but I managed to figure it out on my own. I figure maybe some of these people can relate to the shit I’ve been thru and be more inclined to check out what I have to say since I’ve been there done that

Books are great. They can be used by patients who aren't allowed access to electronic devices (they get into arguments with or abused by people they know that drive them into further mental decline).

I'd be happy to look it over, once you think it's close to being done. Sometimes feedback to early in the writing process disrupts the natural flow of ideas. No book will be perfect for all people, but your unique approach might hit home with people in a way that other writers haven't.

WhitePowerRanger 23 points ago +23 / -0

Yes it’s a huge mess right now. Like I wouldn’t just send the raw word document, you’d burn your computer and I wouldn’t blame you. But I’m going to screen shot this and I’m hoping to be done writing, organizing, letting it rest, rereading and editing by the end of the year. I just want to make sure I’m not telling people the mental equivalent of “every morning I wake up and drink bleach and stare at the sun because science and you should too because it helps me!” Because I do truly believe in what I’m writing but like you said, I know there’s no one solution for everybody, but I certainly don’t want to give any wrong solutions either!. But I’m hoping to write this book with many solutions for many people so that even if you don’t like some of the chapters, if you can get behind most of them, you’ll do all right lol.

Anyways I super appreciate this and I will definitely make sure it’s in the latter stages before I burden you with it. I’m pretty much a perfectionist at heart, so I wouldn’t send a half assed manuscript anyways.

Hey, I've almost always been a lurker in forums like this for years, but your comment really resonated with me (plus, it's a little low on the comment chain). I just want to say to you, as someone who has battled mental illnesses and trying to figure out how to create/manage a life worth living, I say go with your book. I think a lot of the existential crises people have have been written about for millennia, and there are common themes, but every generation faces different battles with these issues. Biggest example, the internet. I don't think depression or other mental illnesses are a modern creation, but the effect the internet has on them is new. And if you have found things in the 21st century, with 21st century technology complicating things, that help you, sharing them is a positive.

And hey, a positive of 21st century technology is that you can reach more people with your ideas than ever before. And I'm always for sharing the most amount of ideas to be able to find what may work for a person, even if it's just one person.

13
WhitePowerRanger 13 points ago +13 / -0

Hey mate! I just want you to know your comment resonated with me magnitudes more than mine could have possibly resonated with you. Like honestly I’m sat here choking back tears cause no one really says nice shit like that to me ever lol. My parents sent me to the ghetto for school under the guise of “magnet school” in inner city Jacksonville back when it used to be like top 10 cities to get murdered in. Anyways my point is I grew up around a lot of fucking thugs and drug dealers and gang bangers and just really not nice kids or teachers. Like I said, I learned to survive my own way. Like if you go thru my post history, i come off really stand offish sometimes and I’m really blunt and I cuss like a sailor cause I was cussing and saying the n word by age 7 (not out of racism. Just you hear everyone else saying it, and you do too, and then find out it’s racist just in time for it to be indelible in your hippocampus (that’s how you do that Christine Blasey Ford).

But yes the internet is a fucking mess and it’s not doing us any more favors than problems it’s creating. And you’re right, no one has really addressed that and I hope I can turn into words how I’ve managed to kick the habit. Simply put, there’s only ever one single reason I hear for people not wanting to delete social media, and that’s “I want to keep up with people I don’t see all the time” and it’s my goal to convince them there’s a reason you don’t see them all the time. Can you believe the iPhone isn’t even 14 years old yet? Mainstream acceptance of social media is even less than that because that all came with the iPhone. Anyways I always loved getting the newest iPhones but I watched my best friend from high school literally get sucked into his fucking phone all the time we’d hang out. Texting his girlfriend that he fuckin lives with and sees me once a year. I took him skiing in Colorado all expenses paid, sat on the bunny slope texting his girlfriend. Dude missed out on a lot of life staring at a screen. And we don’t talk to this day because of it. Funny how he could never text me lol.

Anyways. Thanks for your kind words and I’d be happy to share a copy with you if you’re interested as well!!

WhitePowerRanger 8 points ago +8 / -0

Shit I was high as shit writing that comment and it just went all over the place lmao. What I meant was;

If you really cared about someone, you don’t need Facebook to “keep up with them”. People have been writing letters for centuries and making phone calls for a while. You can’t mitigate your relationship with humans to a computer. That’s fucked up.

And then I just used that as an excuse to bitch about my ex best friend because I was all sad boi because I was thinking how even my own best friend was usually a fucking dick to me and never once said anything nice to me ever.

For the love of all that is holy, find the willpower to finish that book and put it on shelves across this beaten and battered Nation. I've dealt with a significant amount growing up and young me wouldn't even be able to recognize myself as I am now, even though my core ideas haven't changed (seek the truth no matter where it leads). A help book written for the 21st century by someone young and still kicking is exactly what young me would have picked up. If you want to send anything my way, or if you accept monetary help, I will make time or put aside some cash to help make this a reality. Our society needs it now more than ever, and you would be doing God's work. (Even if you dont believe in Him).

Oh how much easier my life would have been if I received any kind of help during my darkest period other than a handful of people either in the same boat without a light through the thick fog or by people who have no clue what's going on.

If you need any help at all. Ask. I never want others to go through what I have and fail instead of pushing through hell.

My grandma told me I was born in the wrong time period and I should have been a philosopher. She told me this when I was like 15 cause I remember being pissed off cause that sounded like such a stupid job to a teenager lol. But I think I found a way to put all this crap I think about to use by writing and responses like yours man, just knowing that this could possibly benefit someone let alone some people, that would blow my mind. Jordan Peterson has been a huge hero of mine since he became famous. The way he talks and thinks is absolutely fascisnating to me and I’ve lapped up everything I can from him. My rules are still my rules and my experiences are still my own but he inspired me to write them down. But even he is older and didn’t grow up with the internet like I did, but listening to him talk and reading his book gave me the vocabulary and the very basic understanding of psychology to put into words how I’ve managed to cope.

I hope all this makes sense. My book isn’t this bad at writing I swear 😂 I’m just exhausted and high as shit and this week has been a nightmare with my uncle passing away and that side of the family is crazy and dealing with software changes at work and my brain is going to start leaking out of my ears here shortly I swear.

I do believe in God and I have a chapter about religion that I think even the most devout atheist can at least read and not think it’s preachy. seeing as how i used to be that person (see this is what I mean lol I have a story for everything 🤪). I used to wear whatever stupid hat I folded out of paper around school and said it was my atheist hat to keep God out of my head in middle school because I thought the concept was so unbelievably stupid. And I’m writing about how a kid like that found and maintained my own personal connection with God and basically the simplest way I can explain it without writing another book is appealing to their desire. “Prayer works. If you don’t ask for something, how would anyone know to give it to you. So close your eyes and start asking for shit. But you wouldn’t just ask your parents for random shit. You gotta sucker up first. Tell God or whoever all the shit you are grateful for first, kiss his ass a little and then ask for what you want. Takes 5 minutes before you fall asleep and no one has to know but you and see what happens.” The whole point is I know it fucking works cause I’ve watched it work a thousand times. And just to get them into a habit of being grateful for what they have and not being afraid to ask for what they want. If you can boil it down to logic and appeal to desire, kids will lap that shit up. “Fuck I can get a ferrrari just by thinking about it?” Yup. But remember to be thankful to or it doesn’t work. Also, some things take time. The bigger things depend how bad you want them and God can tell if you’re rushing thru the thankful bit at the beginning. So if I can just instill a habit of being grateful, and putting yourself out there, if they apply that in life, that works even better and then they’ll realize religion isn’t fucking stupid and it’s basically a roadmap to success. Just outdated as fuck.

And I will absolutely send you a copy as I reach editing stage!!! I’d love any and all advice I can take and help and whatever! Obviously only if you like it of course! Haha I don’t wanna send you shite and you be like “uhh I agreed to this?” So definitely let me send you a copy and see what you think and I’d love to message back and forth if you have any ideas for issues and problems you see, it helps me write and think and brainstorm!! That would honestly be the most helpful if you can remember any issues you had that maybe I just blew thru and didn’t even seem like an issue to me. I want to appeal to everyone I can!

Thanks for your post, and that you're trying to help people by sharing your experience. People may say that your experience is anecdotal, and you're an exception, but at least for me, I struggle to learn anything unless I have an example. You providing an additional example of how to get past things like this gives people one more opportunity to pass it themselves. And really, if you could only help one or two people with your experience, wouldn't it still be worth it?

1
WhitePowerRanger 1 point ago +1 / -0

And really, if you could only help one or two people with your experience, wouldn't it still be worth it?

1000%. And I’ve helped out quite a lot of people willing to listen to me in my life. I’ve helped lots of people kinda pick themselves up and dust themselves off and just essentially get back onto the right path. I knew one kid who was living in an apartment with no electricity or water and stealing food to get by cause he couldn’t afford it. Within a year of knowing me, he had a job making 50K a year. I don’t really talk to him anymore cause like most people, once they get what they want from me, they kinda stop calling for advice lol no one wants to hang out with Plato cause he’s constantly pointing out everything wrong you’re doing. but he’s easier to digest when you have the power to close a book and shut him up. So I’m hoping I can package all the things I’ve done to help myself and others into a digestible book like that so I can just hand it to people instead of lecturing them 🙃

Thank you for your kind words and encouragement. It honesty means so much to me and I’m happy to share a copy with you as I finish! My plan isn’t even to sell it, just hand it to as many people as possible (with digital ebooks that’s easier and cheaper than ever!!) and if it’s truly helpful, then word of mouth will take over and if not, hopefully I get enough constructive feedback to make it helpful!

Books, including audio ones, are like finely cooked meals that nourish your mind, and perhaps the only source of real knowledge, while news articles and blogs are like junk food, tweets and facebook posts are perhaps crack cocaine.

3
omegapede 3 points ago +3 / -0

heh, sounds familiar. Been there, and what helped me was to stop caring what others think and pursue meaningful self-improvement (learn a skill, gain knowledge). I'm interested in the rules you've developed, and it sounds like you are doing better now!

2
WhitePowerRanger 2 points ago +2 / -0

Yes! That’s essentially one of the goals of the book is to break that down logically. It’s really easy to just say “be better. Stop caring” but I’ve developed a process that I fine tune everytime I go thru it. I want to essentially take that idea of learning to improve yourself every single day, and expand on it in as many ways as possible to crack even the thickest skulls. I want people to know that even if they’re poor as shit in a crappy situation or even if they have it all but can’t figure out depression, that there’s a way to beat all of that. It really isn’t that difficult but unfortunately they don’t teach it in schools and if you don’t figure it out on your own, you’re fucked.

I’m super happy you figured it out on your own and I’d love to share what I got with you! I’m sure you’ll read it like I read Jordan Peterson “mhm. Yup. That’s fuckin right. Couldn’t have said it better myself” (in that you agree with me, not in the sense that m I’m the most amazing writer since shakespeare 😂)

Man, Jesus acutally warned in the sermon on the mount that don't fast like the hypocrites who disfigure themselves with sad faces to be seen by men (Matt 6:16). I never would have thought that this verse in particular is so relevent today regarding bulimia and anorexia.

8
NoCommies 8 points ago +8 / -0

The left is not Mia, it's BED or at least EDNOS... the only way it's bulimia (non-recovered) is if she self-diagnosed her purging to be "exercise purging" and tried to run off the 10k calorie binge with one hour of exercise lol

9
MedPede 9 points ago +9 / -0

Funny that you should say that. I just logged in to correct the nagging thought that I should have stated, the left is meant to be Mia - as people with bulimia are seldomly morbidly obese (I have seen a few, including one over 400 pounds) and are more frequently on the slightly heavy side than obese. Thinspiration is a terrible thing.

In any case, thanks for the correction.

Do you think the face of the skinny one is accurate, or did they photoshop her skinnier? It's just that from this angle at least her face looks quite pretty and normal. The pics I've seen, I seem to remember that once they're really far gone they get that hair on their back, and their face looks really old and skeletal. I'm obviously not an actual expert though.

Life management and coping skills would be very useful classes. I've always thought they should have good Home Ec classes be a requirement - learn to meal plan and easily cook meals from real ingredients, plus add some kind of basic Finances thing so kids have a clue about taxes and saving and loans before they end up in college owing thousands.

7
MedPede 7 points ago +7 / -0

First impression of one patient was that they were 40 years older than they were, but I don't think this picture is a photoshop.

No fear can stand up to hunger, no patience can wear it out, disgust simply does not exist where hunger is; and as to superstition, beliefs, and what you may call principles, they are less than chaff in a breeze. Don't you know the devilry of lingering starvation, its exasperating torment, its black thoughts, its sombre and brooding ferocity? Well, I do. It takes a man all is inborn strength to fight hunger properly. It's really easier to face bereavement, dishonour, and the perdition of one's soul - than this kind of prolonged hunger. Sad, but true. And these chaps, too, had no earthly reason for any kind of scruple. Restraint! Need to redistribute that like a true comrade. You might get two decent looking women.

Great photo though.

Look, two incredibly unwell women. Let's tell them to accept their bodies as they are, I'm sure it'll all work out well for them in the end!

JustTheNews 2 points ago +2 / -0

could you imagine being starving and be asked to do a photoshoot with a fat bitch to justify that it is ok? Imagine....

I’ve read somewhere that it’s illegal to eat beef in North Korea because all cows belong to the state.

This is so true. Americans need to learn real history and what really happens to people under Communism. It isn't the paradise their lefty teachers and professors keep talking up.

MakeCaliGr8Again 1 point ago +1 / -0

Should be: Left: fantasizing of communism Right: sick of communism

Antifa wouldn't make it a day in a communist country. I don't think they let you crossdress, get a sex change, do drugs, sit on your ass and post on Twitter or reddit all day.

And now I'm blind. Thanks!

We don't know anything about North Korea.

It's an eerie glympse into the future. All communist states, the people end up looking like this. Luckily, it's not our future.

1
