No joke, but I think that China has deliberately exported parasites, plants, insects, fish and such from their country around the world as a form of psychotic long-term terraforming. Chinese beetles and shit have already destroyed huge swathes of our country's eco system, including elm trees.

I think it's the shipping containers and the pallets (bugs in the wood).

The ships also dump water into the ports. Large reason for the Great Lakes getting clean is the zebra muscles, which aren't native. They did clean the water up.

9
clearsighted 9 points ago +9 / -0

You're probably right about the zebra mussels - who first showed up in the Great Lakes in the 1980s. But I think that especially in the last 10 years, it's become a deliberate policy.

That said, the zebra mussels have done more harm than good: https://oceanactionagenda.org/story/invasive-species-threaten-great-lakes-economy-ecosystem/

Damn I love learning new things.

1
Furaffinitydotnet 1 point ago +1 / -0

I'm not sure about deliberate. I think it has more to do with less and less being made in America and more and more being imported from China.

Eventually, wildlife finds it's way here.

You can call it extreme negligence on the part of the companies shipping from China, but I doubt it's intentional. Doesn't mean the shipping companies aren't responsible, either way.

Same here! I even built a bat house for them. Rather have them than the mosquitoes. Had one get himself pinned between the screen and the decoration on my screen door once, and he passed out barely able to breathe. Once I got him free, he chirped at me a little, but didn't try to bite. (Was also wearing thick leather gloves).

8

This is how you handle bats, folks. These little dudes are biting machines, LOL

i should do this as i get a shitton of mosquitoes in my yard... kinda scared though, do bats attack humans lol?

17
CnnWillBlackmailYou 17 points ago +17 / -0

Non rabid ones don't. :D

The little brown bats are great. They fly around at night and chitter excitedly when they get bigger bugs.

Bat houses are super easy to build, too.

12
Furaffinitydotnet 12 points ago +12 / -0

They don't attack but they might bite if you pick them up. If you get bit you need rabies shots. Which is why you're supposed to wear thick gloves.

Spearmint actually helps with mosquitos as well. They don't like the oils the plants give off.

6
Wharf_Rat 6 points ago +6 / -0

interesting, last year we lined the yard with Citranella plants.. didn't do shit lol

7
Furby4537568 7 points ago +7 / -0

The main thing that they don't like are the oils. So, candles are made with citronella oil, and that's what keeps them away.

I have a giant spearmint plant potted on our deck. Haven't noticed as many mosquitos this year.

3
Nibba 3 points ago +3 / -0

It’s always really fun to sit in the back yard and watch the bats fly around! We used to get them in our house a couple times a year. It was always a blast chasing them down and they were always tame once you got them in your hand.

The bat is long gone. I've checked myself and my family for bite marks, none exist. We will monitor. I'm pretty positive none of us got bit in our sleep, though, as he wasn't aggressive at all. I picked him up (with big leather gloves on) and he didn't once attempt to bite, scratch, etc. He just accepted it (a little squealing at me, but nothing major).

Toys [S] 13 points ago +14 / -1

We were alerted to the bat's presence immediately by our animals. They kept the bat tucked away in a corner upstairs, refusing to move until I removed my animals. I know I should be alarmed, but I am not.

In my town, there has been one positive case of a rabid bat since 2010. And it's not like bats aren't being tested. Two neighbors this year alone had animal control come and remove bats from their homes. Both tested negative.

The chance of the bat being rabid is pretty close to zero. Less than 1/10 of 1 percent of wild bats have rabies. This isn't not a large number. This was also a little brown bat, which very rarely bite humans even when handled by them. It is also very rare of this species to carry rabies.

It could also be a big brown bat, but that bet out here is even "safer" in terms of rabies, with only 3.8% of them tested having tested positive. That's with the bias that it's usually sick bits who bite, and it's usually sick bats who get tested.

I know I should be more alarmed, but I'm not.

10
SilentSnek 10 points ago +10 / -0

Agree with Waylander. Many examples in medical literature of folks developing rabies without any signs of bit marks. I’d get my family the rabies booster immediately.

Not sure I wanna put my family through that. I heard the vaccine is HELL

9
CnnWillBlackmailYou 9 points ago +9 / -0

The vaccine isn't bad at all. I've had it, and not even kidding, if I had an excuse where insurance would pay for my boosters, I'd get it in a heartbeat.

I was actually a Rabies SME for the U.S. Army for years, and if we're being honest, it sounds like you took the proper precautions. I think your risk of exposure is exceptionally low. I won't be an alarmist here, BUT, if I had an "excuse" to go and get a booster, I would do it in a heartbeat.

6
Givemeliberty76 6 points ago +6 / -0

It’s a lot better than it used to be. Not injections in the stomach. The RIg part sucks (one dose) but the vaccine itself (3 doses) aren’t that bad. Definitely better than dying from rabies. This is an old article, but proof that you can die from rabies from waking up with a bat in your house: https://www.rabieswatch.com/documents/31479179/31484278/Article+3-Whyoming+woman+death.pdf/2eb4580a-9aec-4206-a90e-4663b4a8e33d

2
Deplora 2 points ago +3 / -1

The horror stories about post-exposure rabies shots are way outdated. I had them in 1991, after getting bitten by an unnaturally aggressive stray cat that couldn't be found. It was not a big deal at all. Just normal shots in the upper arm. I forget the schedule, but it was something like 5 shots, with the first 2 or 3 a week apart, and then longer times between the remaining ones. In the ER right after I got bit and clawed, they also did a bunch of little tiny shots around the perimeter of the wound. Also not a big deal.

You can also get vaccinated (pre-exposure), which is a different preparation (doesn't include the rabies immunoglobulin), and that's a 3-shot series over the course of a month. Also not a big deal.

3
Toys [S] 3 points ago +3 / -0

This makes me feel much much better about calling the doctor (still waiting to hear back.. fucking Coronavirus fucking up our healthcare system, man). I didn't want to put my family through that shit for a slim-to-none chance it actually bit anyone. I doubt the bat even ever landed anywhere close to the ground as it was being chased by both my cats and my dog. I couldn't see it putting itself in their reach.

But, I did call after many people here have told me it's no different than, basically, a flu shot these days. I just didn't want my family (and especially my pregnant wife) dealing with weeks of bad stomach pain, vomiting, etc for something that is such a small risk.

5
Windwalker 5 points ago +5 / -0

TBF, dying from rabies is a horrible death easily prevented with a vaccine routine, which is why getting the vaccine even in probably safe situations is recommended.

1
Deplora 1 point ago +2 / -1

The vaccine is not the same thing as the post-exposure shots. Normally only people who will have occupational exposure (vets, vet techs, wildlife management workers, etc) get the vaccine, which is a 3 shot series over one month. The post-exposure shots are different -- 5 or 6 shots and contain both the vaccine component and also rabies immunoglobulin.

Windwalker 1 point ago +1 / -0

Oh nice to know!

Just fyi. Bat's teeth are really tiny. When a bat bit me, it didn't leave any marks at all that you could see or feel. If your bedroom doors were open, and the bat was most likely in the house all night, you should call the health department.

If the bat had access to where your family was sleeping you all need to get rabies shots. I had a bat bite me while I was walking around our neighborhood and had to get the rabies series. Not fun but necessary. Call your local healh department, get them to come get the bat and test it (it's free!) and if it's positive for rabies they will tell you what to do. 2

It's not that uncommon for one to just fly in while the door is open. I've had it happen three or four times over the years.

8
iwasbuiltforcomfort 8 points ago +8 / -0

OP, if that bat touched you at all, even for a second. Go to the hospital right now and get a rabies shot. You only have 20 hours or so after infection before it's too late to save your life!

Bats are frequent carriers and small boats like that inside your home can pass the virus to humans without you even knowing it happened. Better safe than sorry!

5
bidensniffingkids 5 points ago +5 / -0

20 hours?! I thought the incubation period was much longer

4
iwasbuiltforcomfort 4 points ago +4 / -0

Your're not wrong. The typical incubation in humans is between 2-6 months. HOWEVER, that's the typical scenario but it can also be very fast depending on where the bite is. Once rabies has reached the spinal cord or brain stem it is almost always fatal. This can happen before symptoms appear and that's the danger here. Most instances of rabies contracted from bats, the victim often has no idea they were even bitten.

5
underthesmellybridge 5 points ago +5 / -0

NO JOKE

You (and everyone else in the house) must get a rabies vaccine.

NO JOKE

This is serious. Bats bite you while you sleep and don't leave marks. Virtually all human rabies cases are caused by bats that get into a home and bite while the human sleeps.

NO JOKE

The vaccine sucks and it's a horrible experience, but you must do it. Your doctor will tell you the same thing.

3
GibsonDawg 3 points ago +3 / -0

Actually you should qualify that second one. Dogs cause 98% of rabies cases GLOBALLY. Bats are higher here in the US only (roughly 70%, I believe). Sorry to sound like an argumentative Reddit fag.

4
EatDirtCommiePinko 4 points ago +4 / -0

That's because rabies kills a huge number of people in India and the surrounding regions each year. It's prevalent in the dogs there and they're in close interaction with humans, so lots of rabies cases originate from them. In the U.S. there are barely any cases at all, but that's because of aggressive human vaccination and extermination of suspected positive animals. It hides out in bats and is still present in the U.S. because certain species are a natural reservoir, though we've eliminated most of the small to medium sized animal vectors.

The capital-L Libertarians are trying to meme bats into being their thing, after Jo Jorgenson got bitten by one. The Lolbertarians can't meme, folks.

AccipiterQ 2 points ago +2 / -0

did you net it and toss it back outside?

6
Toys [S] 6 points ago +6 / -0

No. I put on leather gloves, picked it up, and carried out to the tree outside. It wasn't too happy with that, but I made sure I was well covered before I touched it. Then I took a 45 minute shower, lol.

I have patriot bats

I have a thousand bats in my barn & bat houses on the property, they live here rent free and housing provided as compensation as they are the Mosquito control group,

they arent those filthy CCP bats

1
Chaotikizm 1 point ago +1 / -0

If you have a chimney- make sure the chimney damper is closed by pulling the chain out as far as it goes and securing it.

I had a bat in the house last year and had to learn about my chimney I never use. We suspect that is how it got inside.

1
Deplora 1 point ago +2 / -1

You'll save on your heating bills too.

I’m super regretting not taking a photo of the bat I hit with my truck and it was stuck in the grill. I laughed pulling it out and showed me neighbors like “doing my part!”

-1
King_of_China -1 points ago +1 / -2

Not sure why this got traction but you fell right into the Chinese government’s trap when associating a bat with the Chinese virus. The virus was designed in the lab and not from Mother Nature.

Also Chinese don’t eat bats and I find this posting offensive.

(Am Chinese in the US.)

Boomer jokes? Look what happened when Romney and McCain were running for president. Nothing at all.

Young people are making memes. Old people barely know how to use a computer but they know how to vote.
