I recently read a biography of Thomas Jefferson. He hated the media back then for the same reasons we do today.

It's just a propaganda machine like the chicom's. In some cases even worse. Don't expect to find any useful information there, and don't expect to get any hope or inspiration there. The future of media is podcast. You can be preoccupied with other things like cooking, housework, exercise, gaming while your device is playing it and you listen to it. And it's far more intimate than a highly produced and edited program of a suit behind a panel talking to a bunch of "experts".

There were more real journalists back then, but I will agree that the media has always been crooked. The narrative wasn't so tightly controlled as long as people didn't sniff around where they weren't supposed to.

As a side note, Dorothy Kilgallen (may know her from the popular game show at the time, "What's My Line") was likely killed because she was digging too much into the JFK assassination. They made her death seem like an accidental death from pills and booze. What's going on today is nothing new.

There is no such thing, at this date of the world's history, in America, as an independent press. You know it and I know it. There is not one of you who dares to write your honest opinions, and if you did, you know beforehand that it would never appear in print. I am paid weekly for keeping my honest opinion out of the paper I am connected with. Others of you are paid similar weekly salaries for similar things, and any of you who would be so foolish as to write honest opinions would be out on the streets looking for another job. If I allowed my honest opinions to appear in one issue of my paper, before twenty-four hours my occupation would be gone. The business of the journalists is to destroy the truth; to lie outright; to pervert; to vilify; to fawn at the feet of mammon, and to sell his country and his race for his daily bread. You know it and I know it, and what folly is this toasting an independent press? We are the fools and vassals of rich men behind the scenes. We are the jumping jacks, they pull the strings and we dance. Our talents, our possibilities, and our lives are the property of other men. We are intellectual prostitutes.

-John Swinton, New York Times editor-in-chief 1860-1870

"Nothing can now be believed which is seen in a newspaper. Truth itself becomes suspicious by being put into that polluted vehicle. The real extent of this state of misinformation is known only to those who are in situations to confront facts within their knowledge with the lies of the day. I really look with commiseration over the great body of my fellow citizens, who, reading newspapers, live & die in the belief, that they have known something of what has been passing in the world in their time; whereas the accounts they have read in newspapers are just as true a history of any other period of the world as of the present, except that the real names of the day are affixed to their fables. General facts may indeed be collected from them, such as that Europe is now at war, that Bonaparte has been a successful warrior, that he has subjected a great portion of Europe to his will, &c., &c.; but no details can be relied on." - Thomas Jefferson, 1807

NO. "Journalists," be they writers, publishers, criers, all arbiters of information have ALWAYS spun their own narrative, since the days of the Roman Republic, Greece, and earlier. How the 20th century has become a "Golden Age of Journalism" is beyond me. There were three TV channels and a few large newspapers; what they chose to run was as much the narrative as what they chose to ignore was outside of the narrative.

A century ago, one Joseph Pulitzer used lying, hyperbolic story-crafting, and social manipulation through information monopoly, what we now know as FAKE NEWS, to goad the nation into the Spanish-American War and sell copies of his print. He then had a prize named after him for "integrity" in journalism.

It is a JOKE. People cannot control their own biases, especially with limited time to select what to cover, and often have no intent to control their bias at all. The Founders complained about it in their time; what makes you think the 20th century was special?

That's alright, soon enough more and more of these kind of people will appear and they all will turn into one hideous brown blob. It will be so disgusting to look at and we will try to flash-freeze them with liquid nitrogen and blow them into smithereens.

Don't blame you for not remembering them. I just remembered Anita because I recently read about the The Last of Us part 2 plot being leaked and Anita was being blamed for the ruination.

Actually a bit before that with the end of the occupy movement. There’s a lovely /pol/ infographic out there somewhere showing the amount of failing New York Times articles on race skyrocketing around the time the powers that be were fracturing the occupy movement with identity politics.

1
lerm4comptroller 1 point ago +1 / -0

The TEA party types started to show up, and they didn't sound like the evil hate-mongers they were made out to be and fit in quite nicely in fact. The socialist Occupiers were starting to look towards their "leaders" with suspicion, wondering where the hell these "organizers" came from and why they kept encouraging them to commit crimes. The more unionist/traditional left Occupiers started figuring out that Democrats were just using them for votes with no chance they'd ever push their agenda.

... Dude, it was fucking terrifying to the deep state. Not so much the "occupy" part, but the social repercussions happening around it. Imagine if everyone figured out that they had more in common with their neighbors than with the multi-millionaire representing them in the Senate for decades who visits the nicest part of their home state once a year.

Much better to just get everyone to hate each other because of the color of their skin.

I was too busy hearing about how bad Fox News is (outside of Shep Smith who surprise, my far left Jabba the Hutt cosplaying professor loved) but at the same time Trump is the greatest threat to a free press. When people ask if I regret dropping out of college I tell them my only regret was not dropping out after my first semester.

Kind of. More like endless online ads where the story is barley a paragraph wedged between 20 banner ads or worse, a slide-show with 5 ads per page. If they don’t sell print and don’t have subscriptions, the only option is ads.

Recently watched "Hangman" out of sheer boredom and [Spoilers ahead but the movie sucked] and there was this journalist played by Brittany Snow. She is being nominated for the Pulitzer prize and she wanted to work with a cop to investigate a serial killer's killing rampage to boost her chances of getting the prize. She also work for NY Times.

She complimented on the cops for their dedication to solving the crime as well as catching the killer (shocking, I know...), while putting her life at risk of getting killed at one point. At the end, the killer gets caught (he ded) and I'm going to assume she writes the story from her POV.

While the movie sucked because there were plot holes and stupidity (Hurray for Hollywood), I was like, "Yeah that's the kind of journalism I'd read, not any of those dumb shit articles like 'Here's why men need to use douche to cleanse their anus, #7 will shock you!' and crap like that. That's not even real journalism!"

Well = maybe maybe not. On GA, Laura Ingells made this stunning comment. This isn't me, but I thought I should share with those on here who don't go to voat...

Quote: [–] Lauraingalls  I would too. Did you ever hear of Walter Cronkite saying he would sit on the right hand of SATAN? On October 19, 1999, Cronkite accepted the Norman Cousins Global Governance Award from the World Federalists Association at a ceremony at the United Nations in what WND reported as a “total media blackout”. "In his speech, Cronkite declared his support and allegiance to a ONE WORLD GOVERNMENT.. He blamed the refusal of the U.S. Congress to ratify one-world-government treaties on “a handful” of obdurate senators who “pander” to the Christian Coalition and the “religious right wing”. Identifying Pat Robertson as the leader of the Christian Coalition, Cronkite quoted Robertson, that “any attempt to achieve world order before that time must be the work of the Devil.” Cronkite then mocked Robertson by declaring, “I’m glad to sit here at the right hand of Satan.” https://fellowshipoftheminds.com/one-world-government-walter-cronkite-im-glad-to-sit-at-the-right-hand-of-satan

My parents came to America because they wanted to leave a communist country and immigrate to a country where they can build good and prosperous life’s for themselves and their children without the need for government handouts or family connections, and now people are saying we need government handouts or family connections just to make it in this county and that’s why we need socialism.
