The basic idea was this: It is not reasonable to assume God exists, therefore everything Christianity is founded upon is wrong. I was also in the mindset that most bad things happen due to irrationality, and that religion was a major source of that. Also one of my brothers got caught into a cult and spews weird nonsense, even though he is quite intelligent (that lay on hands thing and "seeing auras" to the extreme).

As a half Hungarian however I was never very fond of Islam, actually I considered it the worst of all, so I was consistent in that regard. And neither did I thought highly about Judaism. This, and my curiosity about fascism (idea: well, many people seem to advocate for communism/socialism, so what's wrong about National Socialism then?) rendered me a "quasi"-leftist. I was still fond of Socialism. (Technically Nazis are leftists anyway.)

Well, it took a Jordan B. Peterson for me to realize the true value of Christianity and its philosophies.

The real tragedy is that personality wise I was highly drawn to Libertarianism all along, but I had to put up with all that ideological nonsense, only because I lacked exposure to the explanation of Conservative and Libertarian values - or a general/fully rounded understanding of things. Various things as I perceived them didn't make sense, with the catalyst being: "If leftists are the good guys, how comes they support a demon like Hillary? I get it, Orange Man Bad... but when's the hog's turn to get roasted?" Turns out, it didn't happen. I turned away from these pundits who grew into Orange Man Bad channels, I grew bored of it... or I don't know what it was, but had enough of them.

So at the beginning of 2016 I did the following: I dropped all my judgment and started off as a Tabula Rasa. I thought up pro- and contra-arguments for various ideologies, I evaluated everything, I also wrote it down. I wanted to understand the essence, the core of these ideologies - I wanted to get to the roots. Several months later I was confronted with Libertarian values the first time - and that clicked quickly with me.

Anyway, all of that was successful, I purged leftism & socialism out of my system, and I am now well aware of things like propaganda, loaded questions and how the media manipulates. And I am finally certain about my own beliefs, unlike before.

Thanks for the unexpectedly full and frank reply! :)

God I fought this battle soooo often at college. My point was that if it was completely unacceptable to wear a swastika t-shirt, it should also be completely unacceptable to wear a hammer and sickle t-shirt. We don't glorify the nazi regime due to the evils they committed, so why does the soviet regime get a free pass? It was literally 10 times as murderous and at least as oppressive. Even fucking askreddit agreed that this double standard was total BS.

Then there was my psychology tutor who insisted homosexuality was completely natural. I pointed out that the base reason for any organism to exist is reproduction, the continuation of genetic material. Therefore, no it is not 'natural'. Of course this was conflated as me hating gays despite my argument being that it's fine and people should be free to pursue their sexual orientation, but don't be calling it normal and natural. It demonstrably is not.

Oh and my English tutor who marked down a Thatcherite style speech I wrote for a persuasive writing assignment. It was marked down for its political stance, not its persuasiveness/technical competence. I was told this outright by the sandal wearing beardy tutor.

lol Safe to say my tutors did not like me (except for the based old lady who taught British and European history, she was great.)

I can't say I had a good education. None of my teachers or professors anywhere were of any remark to me. The good ones were those who didn't unnecessarily torture us. Unsurprisingly, I developed 99% of my skills outside of the government education system. I honed my language skills and grammar by writing, debating and flaming on WoW forums back in the days even.

so why does the soviet regime get a free pass?

Well, because as you probably know, media, academia, most of politics are dominated by Marxists or "moderates" leaning towards Marxism. But it's not just that, it's rather the hippie idea of boundless tolerance and welcoming of degeneracy. Someone argued that postmodernism and everything it entails in itself is the issue. So there is a massive bias.

But see it like this: The clever trick was to pretend that fascism is oh-so fundamentally different from communism (or "Democratic Socialism" / "Socialist Democracy"), but the truth is that fascism is an authoritarian revolt against Marxism itself - like the degeneracy promoted in media, or even their fake news - while largely being similar to its practices. The underlying ideologies are in opposition and somewhat orthogonally turned (race based vs class based) - but both are deeply collectivist, anti-capitalist, anti-Individualist. Both oppose free speech, both have little regard for human rights (negative rights) or individual liberty.

However, Marxism is a multitude more brutal and cult-ish. You could say, in many regards Marxist type Socialism is like Fascism on steroids.

So by name-calling people bigot, Nazi, racist, etc - they pretend that the person is close to fascism or a fascist, while also pretending that they themselves are somewhat different. But it's closer to: "We are playing the same game, and we are rivals, so I publicly smear you to damage your reputation while I bolster mine. It's all about power, and the end justifies the means."

A Libertarian however is in fundamental opposition to both ideologies, and may very well see them to be the same type of overzealous, authoritarian insanity. And the fascist would say: "Well, if the Marxists win because you are too weak and let them abuse you every time, your liberties will vanish anyway, and you will get the worst of both worlds: Maximized tyranny & an insane cult attempting to dissolve your culture forever."

But power corrupts inevitably. It's a devil's bargain. And it will backfire heavily anyway... all the while all sense of ethics is thrown overboard.
