Not a good look for GM. Had to be forced instead of cooperating for the good of the country. People will remember after all this is done.

I used to be an SEIU rep/business agent and it's what redpilled me. I still believe in collective bargaining for the private sector, but holy shit is SEIU dirty.

2

I still believe in collective bargaining for the private sector

Why though? Unions seem to be bad news (nepotism, "seniority" in place of merit, bureaucracy) almost anywhere.

1

Was a steward with them. They are shit.

8
Pede 8 points ago

I'm sure that's what they were used to doing. Charge crazy amounts, and then Obama or Hillary calls in a favor later on.

6
HiGloss 6 points ago

They should DONATE those "found" masks!

79
Libertysheimdall1 79 points ago

They wanted to play around asking for more money apparently. As if the stuff they pulled post-2008 crash wasn't bad enough.

42
randomusename 42 points ago

They are a Chinese company. Mary Barra is an Obama appointee from the last days of government ownership of GM. She cares more about China and their SAIC-GM partnership. Most likely it SAIC calling the shots at GM through her. She hates America.

52

Mustang vs Camaro vs Corvette vs Hellcat. Who wins? America wins!

13

Probably Corvette tbh. Every time I've gone to one of those races where it's just normal people in their cars, forget what it's called, if there was a Corvette in the race, it won.

16
WelcomeToCornPopCopy 16 points ago

I will too. I've been Honda my whole life but we want to grow our family and they don't have a worthwhile SUV with a 3rd row. The Pilot is stupid overpriced for what it is.

Going American and had tabs on the GM brand and sub brands. Even though I didn't agree with the bailout, if they became a comeback story and rehabbed back to traditional American values, I'd change my tune but Fuck em now.

15
Major_Nutt 15 points ago

Get a Toyota, they're made in San Antonio. More American than GM, Ford, or Dodge.

7
magabigleague2 7 points ago

Too bad, I really love the Yukon.

5
WelcomeToCornPopCopy 5 points ago

I learned to drive in a Yukon. My family owned only 1 GM ever. Not bad per se, just never went back to GM I guess. Maybe it's gotten better, but they had weird sight lines, so the parking difficulties got to be too much. Lol my dad almost killed the neighbors boy because he couldn't see him playing in front of the car. Haha I really can't explain it. Great interior though, and that was 20 years ago!

7

We have a ‘12 pilot. It has a third row and wasn’t that expensive. I think it’s ugly but it’s been practical as hell. And we can probably drive it until the wheels fall off.

3
DarthFuckinVader 3 points ago

My wife owns a third row Durango. We love it

3
EmperorTrump2020 3 points ago

take a look at the Kia Telluride. made in USA and it swept pretty much all SUV awards last year. so much technology packed into that thing. Just make sure your local Kia dealership is good.

5

4

30

I still remember them paying back the government bailout loan with government bailout cash and gloating about it. I will never buy a GM product.

30

Not a good look.

21
GodKingHarambe 21 points ago

My dad was a GM man, for years. He quit buying GM because they took Obama stimulus money.

9
WestCoastG 9 points ago

i think they were all forced to, no? ford, for example

16
randomusename 16 points ago (edited)

Ford didn't need it, they had already streamlined before the crash. They sold off extra brands, and even put a mortgage on the blue oval trademark. Allen Mullany was CEO at the time, formerly from Boeing, and he got them lean and it was just at the right time.

Chrysler was owned by Cerberus Investment, and they only wanted Chrysler Financial. They thought they would sell the car divisions, but with the crash no one wanted them. Chrysler manufacturing would have gone under and been sold at auction in pieces if the Government didn't take them over and find a partner with FIAT.

GM thought they would be smart and take money even though they were going to go bankrupt anyway before the crash. Well with the money came government oversight. The Obama admin had to approve everything in their bankruptcy. They told them what brands to kill - Pontiac, Saturn, they put in a new board, and they appointed Mary Barra CEO as one of the last things they did. During the bankruptcy, SAIC became the majority owner of their China joiint venture SAIC-GM. They gave back the 1% that made them majority on paper, but they have been calling many of the shots at GM since. Barra is weak, and is running a Chinsese company doing whats best for China

5
the_mcgee 5 points ago

Yeah, sucks what happend with Chrysler but they’re doing good now. RAM is on point especially.

7
Shroudedf8 7 points ago (edited)

I thought Ford declined the assistance...

Edit: I guess it's not that black and white. Ford didn't take TARP money but did take loans under a different program that it paid back. If what I read is correct it asked to be included in the loan program because Ford felt it would be at a huge disadvantage in trying to compete with bailed out GM and Chrysler. So, they technically didn't get bailed out the same way the other two did.

1

1
Shadilay_Were_Off 1 point ago

Wait, forced to? How?

1
WestCoastG 1 point ago

Not forced, but another pede explained below that they took a loan they didn't really need because the others needed it. I guess to even the playing field?

13
chuckachookah 13 points ago

Agree.

Had been between a new Silverado or a new Ram.

It’s been a bit since I had a Dodge truck.

Any Pedes have any feedback on the latest 1500 or 2500 Ram options?

12
texascpa 12 points ago

I just got a 2020 Ram 1500 Limited (upgraded from a 2010 Titan) last weekend. I had been in the market for a Jaguar F-Type R, but when I saw Ram's recent ads about rebates and pricing, I took a look. I bought one the next day and couldn't be happier. This truck is f'in awesome. Biggest touchscreen on the market, amenities out the ass. Make sure to get the split tailgate and bed side storage. Cool as shit. BTW, out the door for $46.7K (after 6500 trade-in), stickered for $68K.

6
chuckachookah 6 points ago

Thanks the details. And the figures. This was the version I was looking at; and the 2500 with the diesel. The 2500 is a bump.

Sad that GM would really flake at a time of public need. It’s too bad when a CEO of a major American corporation doesn’t have enough sense to keep her political beliefs out of business decisions.

2
I_Love_45-70_Gov 2 points ago

I factory ordered mine (Limited 4x4) in 2017. Already have 53k miles on it, but it still looks brand new and is very comfortable for cross-country trips. Great truck.

But....it can't compare to my '94 "Mazdarati" B3000. Nothing like a fake exotic beater pick-up.

6
chinita_atx 6 points ago

Don't know anything about trucks, but in TX, I see the ram insignia the most.

2
chuckachookah 2 points ago

Seems like a helluva real work recommendation

2
chinita_atx 2 points ago

I get bored in the car, and saw so much of insignia that I started a turrets-like utterance of "dodge" every time I saw it. That's even in the middle of belting out a song. I do it so much that my goddaughter picked it up. Hahaha.

6
acebart3 6 points ago

The mister and I each drive a Ram 1500. LOVE THEM. Mine is an older 2012 model limited edition that still looks and runs like brand new, 4x4, all the bells and whistles. Mama loves her truck. He has a 2020 tradesman addition, kind of bare bones but great for what he needs it for. Highly recommend

5
magabirdlady 5 points ago

Silly boys Trucks are for girls!

3
acebart3 3 points ago

Heck yeah! I’m the hiker in the family and I love going to obscure places up in the mountains that only my truck can get to the trailhead. My son thinks I’m crazy, but I am in love with driving down those wild barely roads.

2
BKav 2 points ago

My wife drives our ‘19 1500 limited most of the time as well. It’s badass

3
phate451 3 points ago

2
acebart3 2 points ago

Ha, I’m the mama

2

I guarantee that both I and your husband got us a great catch.

😂

Thanks for the details on the Ram.

6
LibertyorDeath45 6 points ago

RAM is winning all the car magazine comparisons, and I know a few truck guys who love them. The 2500 Tradesman with some upgrades seems like a good price for what you get. I want one.

3
Don-O-Mite 3 points ago

Transmissions are still occasionally flakey as is tradition. Overall solid vehicle though.

2

1

Yo.. it’s automotive, there’s a lot of contracting and indemnification shit going on. Cut em a little slack, they build Yukon’s, not medical devices.

1
LugNuts 1 point ago

At the same time, they will forget the bailout for shitty cars with no innovation. GM is a sad shell of what it used to be. Also, the repayment of the bailout went into Obama's slush fund, out Congressional control. It was a laundering scheme.

1
FragoDelight 1 point ago

Do we know if this was due to them being uncooperative or was it to protect them from legal liability as they shift production and violate existing contracts they have?

4
Necrovoter 4 points ago

I've seen rumors (zero sources/substantiation) that they were dickering over what percentages each of the companies involved would get, and President Trump ordered them to start production immediately.

I've no idea is this is true. It does align with what President Trump says in the statement:

"Our negotiations with GM regarding its ability to supply ventilators have been productive, but our fight against the virus is too urgent to allow the give-and-take of the contracting process to continue to run its normal course. GM was wasting time. "

13
RealRedneck 13 points ago

Yep. Just dumped my GM stock.

4
WEWLADSDALWEW 4 points ago

I used to be like that. And I understand why people think that way. But, at least for me, as time went on I realized I don’t live on a theoretical chart of political opinions. It’s good to have principals...and it is essential that we don’t just follow every whim that arises in our minds...but sometimes you have to do things out of the ordinary, with the firm resolve that, we’re the situation different, you’d have made a different call. This is specifically why it really matters who is in office. At least for me.

1
Mark2 1 point ago

But is trump doing this for political reasons or because ventilators are in use. And why GM and not the other companies?

1
Shadilay_Were_Off 1 point ago

I mean.. the reasons he called out (GM goldbricking on getting the work done because of hemming and hawing over the percentages, and we don't have fucking time for this) seem pretty legit on their face.

And GM because they stepped forward in the first place.

I can appreciate that point of view too honestly.

3
Moviefone_Kramer 3 points ago

I'm honestly very sad to see how people on our side have lost their minds too with this. I know what I would call this when China orders private companies to do things.

This and the $2 trillion debt bill are awful.

1
Fizbin7 1 point ago

Takings should come with compensation. But they are fully envisioned by the constitution on that basis. When the government orders a business to close for the sake of a public health objective, that's a taking. Compensating for it is perfectly sensible, in line with our constitution and our principles of liberty.

1
Shadilay_Were_Off 1 point ago

Agreed in principle - I think a lot of people here need to go read the full bill, the number of options granted to businesses big and small are quite vast.

The only thing I don't like about this is the debt increase, but again, extenuating circumstances. Doing nothing was not an option.

GM is partially owned by China.

5
somenobody 5 points ago

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Motors

its core automobile brands include Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac. It also either owns or holds a significant stake in foreign brands such as Holden, Wuling, Baojun, and Jiefang.[10]

So it seems to be the other way around, actually. They own bits and pieces of China, so it's in their best interest to keep shit over there afloat. But, wait. What's this?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SAIC-GM

SAIC General Motors Corporation Limited .... is a joint venture between General Motors Company and SAIC Motor that manufactures and sells Chevrolet, Buick, and Cadillac brand automobiles in Mainland China.

Okay, who's SAIC?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SAIC_Motor

SAIC Motor Corporation Limited (SAIC, formerly Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation) is a Chinese state-owned automotive design and manufacturing company headquartered in Shanghai, with multinational operations.

Not even remotely surprised.

Obama invoked the act around 2011 to force telecom companies to hand over information about any foreign-created software they were running. Other than that, it hasn't seen any use in the 21st century 'til the Space Force and then now.

Trump invoked it when the Space Force was created a year or two ago, directing American Aerospace companies to work alongside the new branch.

The Roman Republic in times of great crisis would nominate a man to be a dictator for 1 year to preserve the Republic. He would have untold power. At the end of that year he had to step down. While I am not calling for a dictatorship, sometimes you have to do things in an actual crisis that you wouldn't do during normal times. Also, I have faith in Trump to use it sparingly. He invoked the act weeks ago and hasn't used it, until today when GM was playing games. Do you think Her or Biden or Cuomo would have waited? They would have nationalized the entire economy within 5 minutes of invoking the act. Now, if Trump keeps going and nationalizes further industries and/or does not relinquish control as soon as is practicable of these companies, then I have a huge issue, and I think others here will too.

I don't like the government getting into telling factories what to make, but it really sounds like to me they volunteered to do it and now instead of trying to the right thing, make a little money, and earn some good will they are BSing around just like the Democrats at the expense of the country.

Me: Good, glad to see Trump get tough with a company trying to fleece taxpayers during a crisis. I wonder how /r/politics is spinning this?

/r/politics: The Trump Administration Just Canceled an Order for 80,000 Ventilators to Haggle Over the Price

Fuck's sake. What bastion of journalistic integrity is this from?

"TheRoot.com"

Jesus Christ. This article has to be read to be believed. But don't give them any traffic, I'll copy it here:

If there is a woman in your neighborhood who has ventilators, you might as well go on and get you one to bring to the hospital in case of an emergency because if you are waiting for the president of the United States or his bumbling band of yes-men disguised as an administration to save you, then God bless you.

On Thursday, it was reported that the United States officially has the highest number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the world, despite the virus originating in China. This basically confirms that the Trump administration doesn’t know what the fuck it’s doing, and to that end, the United States is winning at losing.

Oh, and get this shit: On the same Thursday that it was confirmed that we are now the New England Patriots—or is it the Cleveland Browns?—of confirmed coronavirus cases, the White House was haggling over prices to get desperately needed ventilators because they want to shop around for a better price.

From the New York Times:

The White House had been preparing to reveal on Wednesday a joint venture between General Motors and Ventec Life Systems that would allow for the production of as many as 80,000 desperately needed ventilators to respond to an escalating pandemic when word suddenly came down that the announcement was off.

The decision to cancel the announcement, government officials say, came after the Federal Emergency Management Agency said it needed more time to assess whether the estimated cost was prohibitive. That price tag was more than $1 billion, with several hundred million dollars to be paid upfront to General Motors to retool a car parts plant in Kokomo, Ind., where the ventilators would be made with Ventec’s technology.

I’m a dad. I totally understand where the White House is coming from. When I go to get diapers, I am often confused by the brands, strength of diaper, number of diapers for the price and that sort of thing. Now, if my son or daughter has shit themselves and we don’t have diapers anymore, guess what I do? I buy whatever diapers are closest to the register that are in their size and hurry home.

America has shit itself and the Trump administration wants to talk to the manager about the price and whether it’s worth it to spend this amount of money at this time.

I tried to find a better way to put this so that it isn’t jarring, but people are going to die while the president is busy haggling over prices for desperately needed ventilators.

If only there were some government official, some head of state, some person in charge of a large group of people who told the president how badly ventilators are needed.

Someone like New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. He did. He has. Several times.

Here’s how CNBC explains it:

The state has about 3,000 to 4,000 ventilators on hand and has purchased about 7,000 more, but it needs a minimum of 30,000 additional ventilators within the next two weeks, when the outbreak is expected to peak, Cuomo said. Even if GM and Ford can repurpose their auto factories to build ventilators, Cuomo said, they won’t arrive in time: “It does us no good if they start to create a ventilator in three weeks, or four weeks, or five weeks. We’re looking at an apex of 14 days.”

He said the state is now projecting it will need more hospital beds a lot sooner than thought, estimating it will need 140,000 hospital beds to treat coronavirus patients in as little as 14 to 21 days. The state, which currently has just 53,000 hospital beds, previously said it would need 110,000 beds for COVID-19 patients by early to mid-May.

Surely these numbers have to push President Trump to understand the urgency of what’s needed? Nope. In fact, Trump thinks Cuomo’s numbers are being exaggerated.

“I don’t believe you need 40,000 or 30,000 ventilators,” Trump told Fox News host Sean Hannity on Thursday. “You know, you go into major hospitals, sometimes, they’ll have two ventilators. And now all of a sudden they’re saying, ‘Can we order 30,000 ventilators?’”

Ummm, can someone undo South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham’s ball gag so he can tell the president that we are experiencing a fucking global pandemic, which means, we are going to need...forget it. It’s pointless.

Maybe someone could place stock prices on humans so Trump could pay attention to the dropping numbers since all he seems to care about is shoring up the economy.

This person hates America so much it's palpable. And naturally this joke of a website is one of the ones the very rigorous mod team of r/shithole has whitelisted.

What's actually going on: GM is trying to rip us off, and waffling on timelines during a crisis. Meanwhile leftists are screaming that Trump hasn't used the DPA appropriately.

So he does exactly that to put a shitty profiteering company it its place.

Who does the left side with? The profiteers, of course.

I've worked several overseas contracts for DoD and this is pretty much DoD publicly shaming and slapping the shit out of GM.
The last thing any federal contractor wants is to be on the front page in anything closely resembling a scandal as it tends to make shareholders nervous.
And by "nervous" I mean "hmm...if they're bullshitting on this easy win, what else are they bullshitting on? What are they hiding?"
I think there's more to this story yet to come out, possibly in the realm of shitacular processes and equipment.
And with their fucking around with Uncle Sam on quantities of ventilators and pricing, Uncle Sam's going to make damned sure that all of it comes out in the press.

Ok, I'm on board but isn't there some other medical company like Siemens or GE healthcare who would be a lot more equipped to handle the engineering processes for medical design then a car company? I've been an engineer from both types of companies and it's just complete different worlds. I worked in medical factories here in the states making CT scanners and molecular imagers. There are medical companies that could do this. What if we use GE as the head design and engineering and use the muscle of the car manufacturing.

There is a better way to do this.

  1. This is for emergency stabilization measures- Socialism would mandate this indefinitely
  2. GM is being paid for the ventilators at a market value that still allows them to profit. They were trying to skim even more off the top and GEOTUS said no
7
Titan93 7 points ago

Sometimes words aren't helpful. Like, are we a socialist country because of employment insurance? No. It's one policy that hes putting into place; one that he didnt want to use but warned he would if need be. GM didnt want to help anyone, so the President is forcing them to.

Also since the bailout in 2008 doesnt the states own 51% of the company?

4
Yucky 4 points ago

It's an emergency measure directing a company to do something. It's not a long term order that the government will run GM, or take cars from GM and give them out for free to people. It's a one time directive.

Context matters.

3
flashersenpai 3 points ago

I don't know that it's socialist specifically, but it's not a free market approach sure. It's what happens when people decide doing something is better than doing nothing and give the government authority to do whatever.

No one has to "cheer" this.

When you have a national emergency, and GM takes advantage of the situation to basically show that they lied about items they promised to deliver, and then try to up the price, they got burned.

GM was free to never have offered. GM was free to be truthful of their abilities up-front.

GM was free to never take state bailout money.

And you are free to, if you every unfortunately need a ventilator, to make sure that it is not one made by GM.

6
CaptainChrisPBacon 6 points ago

GM who took American Taxpayer money during the bailout? And now says fuck you America? They brought this upon themselves. Americans are dying and GM is Asshoe.

4
indigo_truther 4 points ago

the thing is that the market for ventilators is kind of out of whack right now. who knows how many china secretly bought ahead of time.

trump says he needs 40k, and they say they will only make 6k & will price-gouge.

would you pay the extra $$ & shrug off the capacity shortage? maybe they will not all be used - i hope not! - but if trump is asking for 40k in a few weeks, and i am not sure the market is up for that - especially with a lot of factories idle, etc.
