Fine. That's the carrot. Where's the stick? I know they put something in there that will slap us around. What is it? DACA? Paying illegals? Voting by mail? What?

I think they are doing the checks based on tax filings from 2018-2019. So only taxpayers are eligible, meaning that illegals (unless they stole a SS#) would not get any of the payments. That made me feel a lot better. I'm sure the Democrats stuffed some bullshit in it but it sounds like Nancy isn't getting any of her dumb shit like arts funding and the rest of that fat.

Is this the real one? It has some real interesting limits until the loan is paid back:

MINIMUM WAGE.—The corporation shall pay each employee (full-time and part-time) of the corporation a wage of not less than $15 an hour, beginning not later than January 1, 2021.

(3) LIMITATION ON CEO AND EXECUTIVE PAY.—The corporation may not have a CEO to median worker pay ratio of greater than 50 to 1 and no officer or employee of the corporation may received higher compensation than the chief executive officer (or any equivalent position).

(1) RESTRICTIONS ON EXECUTIVE BONUSES.—The corporation may not pay a bonus to any executive of the corporation.

(2) BAN ON EXECUTIVE GOLDEN PARACHUTES.—The corporation may not pay any type of compensation (whether present, deferred, or contingent) to an executive of the corporation, if such compensation is in connection with the termination of employment of the executive.

“(B) 50 percent of the applicable phaseout amount.

“(2) APPLICABLE PHASEOUT AMOUNT.—For purposes of this subsection, the term ‘applicable phaseout amount’ means—

“(A) $150,000 in the case of a joint return or a surviving spouse (as defined in section 2(a)),

10
DAR1783 10 points ago

Thanks. Is this the one they're working on/voting on today? This looks like the Pelosi house bill IDK but senators are talking about a vote but giving no details. What happened to the senate bill? This is irritating. What's in, what's out? We won't find out until after they pass it? Sucks.

5
white_redoubt 5 points ago

The hill article said "Mnuchin said early Wednesday morning that President Trump was "pleased" with the deal and urged Pelosi to take up the Senate bill and pass it without changes."

So it sounds like it's just the senate bill.

5
OMBOMB 5 points ago

The Senate went back to their original bill, making some changes.

However Pelosi promised there would be future virus bills (and opportunities for her poison).

3

All of the above

3
Mark2 3 points ago

Oh it's just enough that you get used to government handouts. Inflation is coming.

3
horus_falke 3 points ago

The amount of money you accept now will be removed from your tax deductions in 2021, for the 2020 tax year. So if an individual takes the $1,200 now then their deductions are reduced by $1,200 when they file their 2020 taxes next year.

That means a family of 4 will end up taking $3,400 now and in 12 months they blindsided by the huge cut in their deduction when they go to file taxes. It's irresponsible for the government to always tout these as some magical check that we get as free money when it's actually just moving money that people count on to a different point in time. This will be a mess come tax season in 2021.

I feel you on that. I look at it this way, I have had a lot of money stolen from me by politicians to be wasted endlessly, I am okay with getting some of my money back.

16
Kott0n 16 points ago

When they throw money into the economy like this, it devalues the money we are already have and spend. We need the government to fix the buying power of the money, not give us more of it.

1
grenades_and_ham 1 point ago

Was that code for inflation?

2
Kott0n 2 points ago

The issue is inflation is currently tied to nothing. Its arbitrary based on the Federal Reserve board. Gold standard has its flaws but what it did provide, which is crucial, was 100% predictable inflation.

I'm not saying the gold standard is the answer, just merely clarifying what I mean by the buying power. The current system continues to inflate at unsustainable rates.

It also means that when we import from other countries that each dollar gets us more, which in turn lowers the base cost of consumer goods. Maybe this is is why we aren't seeing the inflation in consumer goods.

Weakening the dollar so that the price of an export is more competitive doesn't actually help the economic situation at all unless the increase in revenue out paces the devaluation of the dollar, and even then we would need to inflate wages so that consumers themselves have the same buying power after the devaluation.

7
ADAM_SCHITT 7 points ago

Too bad it's all borrowed (printed) money that we have to pay back.

14
CQVFEFE 14 points ago

I'd be a lot happier if they were just taking care of people who have lost jobs,

But would you be a lot happier seeing the huge battle and endless DELAY that would be caused by "just taking care of people who have lost jobs"?

This isn't wealth redistribution. It's wealth distribution, for a month or two. So people living paycheck to paycheck don't get destroyed or resort to extreme measures.

It doesn't disincentivize work like wealth redistribution a la Andy Yang would have done. Under his plan, millions of lower-income people would just say fuck it, I hate my boss and my job, I'm going nowhere in life anyway, I'm just gonna collect free money, watch TV and eat, smoke, and drink.

Nobody thinks "Hey, thanks Uncle Trumpy Wump, this is it, I've landed on Easy Street, time to kick back."

4
cuhboose 4 points ago

As a current worker, this hasn't affected me at all. I don't want them to spend 2 trillion dollars and add onto the debt, sneaking stupid shit in there to screw me over in the long run.

People living paycheck to paycheck will get destroyed either way. This will take time to come down, it's not like Trump is going to sign it and bam, check is in the account tomorrow, so yes would rather them have ironed it out and did it right instead of putting a blanket across the board to drive cost up.

9
CQVFEFE 9 points ago

People living paycheck to paycheck will get destroyed either way.

Absurd elitist statement. If they have a job that pays a steady paycheck, they're at least able to live and put food on the table. They may be living paycheck to paycheck but that isn't the same as "getting destroyed." Having no money coming in for months is.

1
Racerspuff 1 point ago

This check doesn't, but Chuckie Schumer's "unemployment on steroids" does. Is that permanent? I bet it doesn't expire when this is over.

1
CQVFEFE 1 point ago

10
not_a_shill 10 points ago

It wouldnt be so bad if everyone got back in proportion to what they already pay in taxes. Instead of leaving who they deem "the wealthy" out. Shit the cutoff for this in my area isnt enough to pay rent on a one bedroom.

4
Bramble 4 points ago

Agreed. If they simply ensure people continue to get paid their previous wage, then everyone would work out fine.

1
mixednuts86 1 point ago

It's nothing to get excited about, but if there was any stimulus I could tolerate it's one that encourages people to take the right precautions and afford necessities rather than other stimulus attempts to jumpstart the economy in a recession.

Either way, another couple trillion in debt. I knew Trump wasn't a cut the debt conservative when i voted for him, but I'm happy with him so far.

If there would have been smarter more targeted legislation that aimed more towards other unemployed, that would have been great, but I don't know the logistical nightmare of doing that vs straight Cash.

The real concern is that is this a bandaid? If everyone gets back to work in the next couple weeks, okay... But the money will only go so far.

13

16

Lol, that’s why she works in HR. HR = Human Retard

7
cccpneveragain 7 points ago

This exactly! I aim for a refund of less than $100 and get pretty close every year.

Even if you just save that money yourself instead in a crappy savings account you can make some interest on it. Even if that interest is just $10 or $20 that is money you are letting the government have instead. You also have the benefit of access to the money whenever you need it.

4
westrock2000 4 points ago

I like getting $7500 checks in the spring time under Trumps new tax rules the last 2 years. I could spread it out through the year, but that 1 big check feels nice.

12
Oskar 12 points ago

Would the government loan you $7500 interest free?

10
sustainable_saltmine 10 points ago

refunds? lol people still get refunds? fucking savings bonds fucked me this year. that and apparently default withholding for both men and the wife arent enough to cover

3
Cyer6 3 points ago

For some reason I got hit a little harder on my Federal return this year than in years past. I owe them about 600 where in years past I would always get a little Easter egg. I do my own taxes and have my withholdings set about right, but not sure why 2019 hit me harder than the previous years.

6
BestTimeToBAlive 6 points ago

Im not sure that it’ll be taxable income. When Bush2 sent everyone in the country $400, I don’t think it was taxable.

1
VisualScience 1 point ago

They charge underpayment penalties with a 5-6% interest rate (For 2019. Which is significantly more than you could earn in a savings account or short-term bond). So ideal is $0 owed or as low of a refund as you can get.

51
napoleon4321 51 points ago

This is more compensation than a bailout. The government ordered these businesses to close and these workers to stay home. They must be compensated.

27
MaxineWaters4Prez 27 points ago

You realize that you and I are signing these checks to ourselves.

29
RiverFenix 29 points ago

95% of people (both D and R) have NO concept that anything the government spends comes from TAX PAYERS.

They also don't understand that anything the Government 'borrows' from the Fed, has to be paid back, with interest. In order to pay the interest, more money has to be printed, devaluing the currency already 'out' in the public.

Anyone who saved money, worked diligently, diversified their skillsets.... get fucked.

Anyone who sat on their ass, had too many kids and generally complain a lot... get everything/anything they want/need.

And the zpack is only if you get a bacterial infection while recovering.

13
SwampDrainer 13 points ago

He never said that we weren't aware of that fact. Telling everyone that taxpayer's pay tax isn't some genius realization on your part.

Napoleon4321 is correct. It isn't a bailout because we screwed up. It's the Leftists in government and their media enablers that created this situation. My county is not allowing anyone, in any business smaller than Walmart or UPS, to go to work right now. I want to make money to support myself but the stupid Leftists in charge will not let me So while i would prefer to just go to work, I legally can not, and will be arrested for trying. My bills, however, are not taking a break for the Chinese Virus, so what should i do? You must live in a non-cucked area, which is great for you, but please consider the rest of us.

2
HuggableBear 2 points ago

Checks aren't the way you do it. You're receiving money from the rest of us.

The way you do it is by working with the people who are demanding money from you and get them to be patient through the crisis. You cover their costs with tax breaks, which they have to pay every 3 months and will feel almost immediately.

Think about it. Like you said, your bills are piling up. You aren't even getting this money anyway, your creditors are. So why not just go directly to those people and work with them instead?

The answer is because that doesn't massively redistribute income and drive up the debt. The media has told everyone that the only way to handle this is through YangBux, and now nothing less than that will be acceptable to people, regardless of how ineffective it will be.

I will benefit from this as well as my girlfriend and I don't like it at all.

Plus I'm making money off of day trading as well so while I would rather be at work I'm getting other cash as well.

5
Cyer6 5 points ago

Also married couples who make under $150,000 should get $2400 under the original plan.

16
KickingPugilist 16 points ago

As someone who is still employed working from home, I'd rather not take government money that'll likely come back in taxes and push back our national debt even further back so much.

14
Dadgeek65 14 points ago

If I receive a check I'm saving it to pay taxes with.

It won’t be. People like me that pay out the ass all year and still owe won’t get jack. Meanwhile, basement dwellers will get to go on a Switch shopping spree and illegals will be able to go out and have 3 more kids.

9

It's not. Nobody making over $99K gets anything, whether or not they are the sole family provider and have many children. Really unfortunate.

I haven't seen any iteration of the bill that included sending a check to people making $100k or more. And I think from $70k to 100k the checks they do send get smaller and smaller. The only people getting the full amount are those who filed a return in 2018 that showed less than $70k income.

Marshall 4 points ago

It doesn't matter to most Americans. But as a stimulus, it should go to everyone.

2
AbsurdOpinion 2 points ago

The stimulus package is for small businesses. The checks going out are relief funds for people with low incomes.

1
aangler100 1 point ago

Its not a stimulus, its to help people stay home first, it will stimulate too. Stimulus is fake news.

1
Marshall 1 point ago

Any money that gets into the hands of people who will spend it is a stimulus to the economy. Hopefully, it will have a multiplier effect. How you get it there and what you label it is actually irrelevant.

1
aangler100 1 point ago

I disagree, labels matter there is a reason Fake News calls it "stimulus" (Bush) and "relief" (Obama).

Trump proposed this as a method to encourage people to stay home. This is about the disease, not the economy. Politicians added the bullshit,as usual at a cost to the American People.

1
Marshall 1 point ago (edited)

It can be and is BOTH. If you make it possible to stay home to protect you're own and others health, then you reduce the economic impact by providing replacement funds. If you want to call it mitigation rather than stimulus, then I will give you that as a semantic gesture.

ps I am NOT anti-semantic!

1
aangler100 1 point ago

It is not semantic, relief and stimulus are not synonymous.

By you logic we would call buying medical supplies a stimulus plan to boost the medical supply industry.

You don't call Hurricane relief a stimulous plan.

1
Marshall 1 point ago

OK! You win. It's not a stimulus plan. It won't stimulate the economy in any way and we're headed for economic collapse because it's only a relief plan instead of both.

If it needs veto by Trump we have to let him know what we think, with the details that congress is currently keeping to themselves

He won't veto it. Even he can't afford the headlines of "Trump Vetoes American Relief". If there are poison pills in there from cocaine Mitch, they'll have to be weighed against the largest poison pills of a Dem victory in November.

It's a hard math, that hopefully our favorite president won't have to make, but if there are poison pills in there, he will do the math, and I'll trust his judgement.

Remember how 9/11 resulted in the "Patriot Act", significantly eroding our rights including in creating the FISA court that was used in an attempted coup against our President?

This reminds me of the Patriot Act 2.0... we're going to be paying a lot more than the $2K the govt. is "giving" us.

2
AR14operator 2 points ago

The Patriot Act was written well before 9/11, it was introduced to the house on 10/11/2001 and passed a couple weeks later. Even if they started typing on 9/12, it's a huge bill that nobody read, they just passed it while still in post-9/11 panic.

Exactly. It's not fair, and the more unfair it becomes, the more civilization breaks down. People working their asses off will eventually quit, because what's the point? 0

Up yours. Thousands upon thousands of my favorite dollars have been taken from me involuntarily at the point of a gun for decades. How daft of you to think I'm getting paid because of you.

-2
HowFreeIsIt -2 points ago

Only thousands over decades? You're acting like the government didn't to the same to me, and apparently at a order of magnitude larger than you.

There's a reason they cut they high earners out of this, its a socialist redistribution of wealth to "those that are less fortunate". So again, you're welcome for the hand out, you're clearly receiving a benefit from the government that isn't being granted to those that have achieved more.

-1
mynewspiritclothes -1 points ago (edited)

YOU aren't giving me a goddamned thing - get that through your skull. Getting my own money back on the grounds of eminent domain is not "redistribution."

And if you equate making more money with "achievement," we have two very different ideas of achievement.

-1
HowFreeIsIt -1 points ago

YOU getting a benefit at the government at a cost to those that earn more than you, get that through your skull. And this is definitely a redistribution, the government is effectively lowering the tax burden temporarily for the "less fortunate" well maintaining the same burden on the high earners. This is effectively redistributing the economic impact of a situation that effects everyone so that its doesn't hit the bottom as much.

also: "imminent domain" isn't a thing, and "eminent domain" doesn't apply here being that the government isn't taking anything for public use.

And if you equate making more money with "achievement," we have two very different ideas of achievement.

We are talking about economic situations, what other achievements are there in that arena? or are you just trying to shift the topic so you don't have to face the realities of the situation?

7
donutreplyplz 7 points ago

Shut down congress, reduce tax liability by 50% and let people borrow from their next years refund at no interest (if they over borrow/want to pay it back.) With all the other shit shut down government doesn’t really need a whole lot for essential function. It would let people choose how much they need up to the standard deduction plus child tax credit for those eligible. It’s not pulling money out of thin air like this plan and won’t destroy the economy because people who don’t want/need it won’t get it.

5
TrumpsAlterEgo 5 points ago

Anyone taking a government bail out check is supporting socialism. I get there are people who lost their jobs due to government forced shut downs and I agree there should be some form of restitution. However, if you were previously unemployed you shouldn't be receiving a check.

This is not what fundamental conservatism is based upon. Government handouts and nationalizing businesses is socialism.

Any business detrimentally affected by the mandated shut downs should be allowed to take a massive tax write off for the period of time their businesses were shut down or closed. Meaning if you were closed for 1 month and you lost revenue of $100,000 then at year's end you should be allowed to reduce your tax liability by $100,000 (at a minimum). The IRS could allow for additional deductions as well to make this more in the favor of the business.

Point being is by accepting checks from the government we are literally self programming to accept the creeping tide of socialism in this country.

We will all make it through this time. I want to make it through with my principles intact as well.

1
mtmason21 1 point ago

Beautifully said. This hysteria has resulted in everyone losing their principles. There were so many other ways to provide support that wasn't socialism. The amount of people receiving this cash that already contribute nothing to the economy and weren't impacted negatively by the forced government closures is sickening. There will continue to be a large number of people who were impacted that get no compensation at all. Congress fails again.

Losing faith in this country.

Were you in businss in 2008-10? Loans were most certainly needed. Suppliers couldn't get loans to stock inventory and construction outfits couldn't build without materials. The fact that banks werent loaning shit to businesses was a huge part of why the economy crashed so hard and why so many people lost jobs.

1
independentbystander 1 point ago (edited)

I'm having trouble with the legalese (as I'm sure many are.) These bills are deliberately written to be as wordy and confusing as possible, in order to keep the average citizen from deciphering it. (Sort of like my posts, but I really am trying to make sense and get my points across.) When they say tax "code" it's one of the few things Big Government is honest about.

My situation: I file jointly with my spouse, who works a conventional job with good benefits/insurance. I am a self-employed independent contractor (we can call it that short of doxing myself.) My operating costs always outpace my profits, I've been operating at a loss for some time now. (I want/need to fully retire, but stay in it for the benefit of others who do profit from my work.) Not at the moment of course, because all of my work for the foreseeable future is cancelled and I see no way realistically that my particular sector will fully recover from this.

tl;dr Will I be ineligible for the windfall, due to personally operating "in the red?" My spouse obviously is eligible, as a conventional business employee. (As I said earlier, we file jointly.)

1
axrevolutionai 1 point ago

People who make over 100k should get it if they're single income for a household

People who don't work should get it, because students, housewives, and people who retire early deserve it just as much as the working middle class. Not everyone who doesn't work is scum

especially if the 6 trillion includes pork barrel spending, then everyone should be getting it instead of furthering corporate entitlements

2
mtmason21 2 points ago

Why the hell would students, housewives, and people who retire early get it? Their income was not impacted by the government forced shut down. This isn't about whether or not a person is scum, it's about fiscal responsibility. This whole plan is shit and being paid for by those of us who have been financially responsible. I'm disgusted by the entire thing.

0
Leatherwood 0 points ago

And why the hell wouldn't students, housewives, and people who retire early NOT get it? You don't know the specifics of anyone's financial situation or whether or not they have been financially responsible. The gov should have given this to every American who pays taxes, regardless of their situation. Period.

Those of us who work hard, pay taxes, and are successful will pay for this with higher taxes and/or inflation. It's not free. A bunch of us won't see a dime while the piece of shit Bernie bros who earn a few thousands dollars a year serving lattes are going to get their $1200.

1
Leatherwood 1 point ago

Agree. Everyone should have gotten this. My family always is "above the line" just barely. On the other hand, at least my young adult children will get a check, which will save me some money.

1
pursuitoftruth1776 1 point ago

I think the concept is fine because they shut the economy down, but the amount is too much. No individual should receive a check. It should be at most 500 billion and it should ALL go to businesses to pay their employee and to qualify for the loan they need to keep their employees on staff and/or rehire any laid off employee. That's all that needs to be done. No one with an existing job [actively working still] should receive a check [myself included.]

There is no reason the bill should be anymore than 50 pages.

Businesses that can't survive a couple of weeks of lost business need to fold. This is how competition works. Finally those who planned and saved should outcompete the fragile hyper efficient businesses running on the thinnest margins barely making ends meet. But nope, we earners and savers are again bailing out those who earn less and those businesses that didn't plan for a rainy day.

This is communist ideology. "From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs."
