"There was also discussion of making the payroll tax rollback permanent" is the best sentence I have read in a news article possibly in my life. Taxation is theft.

ELI5 what does that mean for the average worker?

28
SpaceTiger 28 points ago +28 / -0

Immediate benefit? You keep more of your money. Your employers keep more of their money. I don’t know about the effects on social security and the others, will need someone else to explain that.

Staatssicherheit 24 points ago +25 / -1 (edited)

You get a 6% raise immediately

AmericaFirst 19 points ago +19 / -0 (edited)

I think it would mean no social security or medicare deductions which hammer workers (and employers who have to match some of that), but probably the income tax would remain. Sounds too good to be true though.

Staatssicherheit 7 points ago +9 / -2

The trick is that your social security retirement benefits is based on what you put in. If you put in $0, you'll get $0. I would estimate benefits would decrease on average by $10-$20/month in the next 10-60 years.

Assuming the system isn’t completely broken in that time frame.

Casualize 2 points ago +2 / -0

It's already underwater. I'm ok with putting 0$ in since I know I'm getting 0$ back later no matter how much I put in now.

Fine by me. Give me that money so I can invest it and get far better returns than what I would get from ss when I retire.

inquimouse 13 points ago +13 / -0

It will be more immediately noticeable than an income tax cut, very good election move. It will also make employers happy because they have to match your deductions. It could reduce a lot of paperwork and staff at the IRS if they could drop all that collecting and reporting.

Probably you’re looking at making more and/or not losing your job if you have to be out due to sickness for 1-2 months. Hardly anybody knows that that big tax you see on your paycheck, you’re employee pays the EXACT same for you.

When he mentioned this days ago I KNEW he was gonna use the coronavirus as excuse to pass TaxCuts 2.0. Excellent.

21
Franks_Protrusions 21 points ago +21 / -0

It's probably fake news, but it's a great idea. First get people used to the idea, and then abolish the income tax altogether.

This I like!!!!!

Hopefully this is followed up with giving everyone the opportunity to opt out forever.

For the love of God, get this pede a stovepipe hat!

4
NoStumpyTrumpy 4 points ago +4 / -0

There is a sweet irony here considering you were responsible for the creation of income tax in the first place. Way to correct your mistakes Mr. Lincoln!

2
Malsikcuf 2 points ago +2 / -0

Oh shit! TIL. Also word on the street, Abe will challenge you to a gentleman’s duel for your use of facts in current year.

the_federalist 14 points ago +14 / -0

The way they've robbed entitlement funds for years, I've been planning on it not being there anyway. 401k, a Roth, and a pension are going to have to get me through retirement.

Okay I might come out of retirement if this happens.

LilLadyLiberty4All 7 points ago +7 / -0

Don't live beyond your means. Pay off all your debt. Stash money away. This would help with all of that!

7
monk_of_trump 7 points ago +7 / -0

How many new guns per year for me does that work out to? I need to know.

9
schiff_for_brains 9 points ago +9 / -0

6% more guns. Or 1 extra gun for every 17.

3
OMC-RADIO 3 points ago +3 / -0 (edited)

I like the way you math, friend.

Now what will be my next 17 guns?

7
Drinkup4 7 points ago +9 / -2

I find that a tough one. Everyone gets used to it, then it comes back the next year. Not to mention both Medicare and Social Security are on the brink of collapse.

21
Dereliction 21 points ago +21 / -0 (edited)

I think you mean, "Everyone gets used to it, and then support Trump when he wants to make it permanent." Medicare and Social Security need to be solved some other way anyhow.

AbrahamLincoln 18 points ago +18 / -0

Ponzi schemes always collapse eventually.

We can't have infinite population growth forever. That's why we have millions of terrorists roaming our streets. Just a pathetic and desperate attempt to buff up our population total to pay for the Boomers' bad bookmaking.

I would rather live in a safe country than one where I'm paid 20,000 a year to sit in my home and wait to die, while watching my civilization be overrun by barbarians beating down my door.

No social security, bring it on.

4
Branith 4 points ago +4 / -0

Dear GOD let this be so. That's an extra $300 a week in my pocket. It sucks having no more deductions since the kids grew up and moved out on their own.

2
TheMagaMan 2 points ago +2 / -0

Income tax only takes money out of the economy. One of the worst way to raise money for a government. I keep hoping. Taxation is theft

The three biggest categories of federal spending are Social Security, Medicare, and Military. Military is the only one that is discretionary. We don't need military bases all over the fucking world.

Let's see, we can cut the TSA, NSA, IRS, EPA, FEMA, BLM, DEA, FCC, The Fed... that should get the ball rolling.

FTA: Trump, who faces a bitter reelection fight this year,

The news is so fake it’s laughable once you are aware.
