Republicans have always been about integrity and have historically voted against the racist policies the Left has been pushing. Democrats have historically been the oppressors who changed on the dime after JFK when Lyndon B. Johnson started pandering to the black community. It wasn't some gradient or gradual process. It was literally racist one term then a complete u-turn the next.
Don't get me wrong, though. While what the Reps stood for in distant past and now has not changed, their politicians sure have. Both parties now have their shills. I'd consider the vast majority of the Dems and GoP to be shitbags who have very little interests other than enriching themselves. It's a lucrative business, now, in part due to the fact that conflict of interests somehow don't apply to those in office for the most part.
That being said, Republicans have always had a coherent ideology. Power to the people, even if their politicians don't reflect these values. The liberal ideology I grew up with (the similarities with the word liberty is, by no means, a coincidence) very much consistent just the same until recently. Now, it appears that the modern Left just want to be progressive for the sake of being progressive, because they liken change to evolution. The democrats have been pretty much exploiting this as well as the apathetic liberals who (understandably) don't want anything to do with politics. They feed off of ignorance as well as the sycophants who say anything for likes and retweets.
