You are absolutely right, the quote is separate from the verse.

The verse shows that Jesus agrees with carrying a weapon for protection, the disciples found a couple swords and Jesus said, yes, bring them along on our journey.

The quote just points out having a weapon protects yourself and your valuables.

You are right though, it is rather confusing now that I look at it...
