I’m not sure this site is about freedom of speech as much as the freedom to express your political opinion and how one supports that opinion.
We don’t want certain speech to infiltrate, like name calling, as it doesn’t add to the conversation of a political forum. Hence the reason for the downvote button within the comments, but not for the original posts. I do like the idea of hidden vs. deleted, however.
Upvote threshold over fixed time period ensures only comments receiving community support continue to be viewable.
