I'd recommend reading Jon Haidt's "All Minus One" https://heterodoxacademy.org/mill/ as a prerequisite for everyone to understand the importance of free speech. The ideas are 200 years old but still apply today. Haidt has done some excellent work in the past few years to bring these ideas into discussion.
