Salami (not going to try to spell the guy's name) organized the hit on the embassy. His goal was to take many hostages and use them as a bargaining chip. Maybe execute one a day till we backed off. That failed. There are factions in any government. Salami led the hawks. When he failed, he lost support. His plan to attack more embassies was clearly going to result in the destruction of Iran as a modern nation. The other factions - the relative doves - wanted out. They didn't have the ability to take Salami out themselves. So, they went thru channels to tell the US where exactly Salami would be. Probably even set up the meeting he went to. The US takes him out. They say they've been tracking him for 3 days. But no, they knew exactly where he would be. Iran fakes a counterattack, but they warn the US to remove all Americans. Ironic, right? Iran doing its best to protect American lives. Then dozens of Salami backers get arrested (and maybe executed). The doves take over. They don't want war. They want prosperity. Now, Iran is going to back off everything. No more funding terrorists. No more nuclear development. It's all over now, baby blue. OK. That's just how I see it.
