The decline of Christianity has a lot more to do with priests sexually assaulting children and getting away with it. And the church strategizing ways to make it happen. People tend to not like that sort of thing. It makes them question what they are actually supporting.
Asking the working poor for a tithe every week dissuaded a lot of them from attending church, as well.
The lack of a common morality is the death rattle of civilization.
I say this as a Christian.
In my view, Christianity in the US was once nearly ubiquitous, and therefore acted as a (relatively) unifying common morality.
There were still shitty people, atheists, bad Christians, and nonconformists, but there was no real counter-narrative to living according to the Golden Rule and 10 Commandments.
As we decend into multicultural tribalism, and move away from social homogeneity, it's difficult to get society to agree the most basic concepts of what is universally right or wrong.
Worse, within our tribes, we can agree on a common morality, but all bets are off for the tribe competing with us.
To be clear, I'm not talking about racial homogeneity, I'm talking about cultural. That's the real damage of multiculturalism is that we can't even agree on what it means to be American anymore.
This is true. Many religions do not promote morality anymore.
What people need is faith, not religions. But too many are mixing that up.
You might not need to believe in Jesus to realize that his teaching is good.

Atheism, if it succeeds, will kill Christianity in any meaningful form, and who will stand against Islam then? The barbarians are at the gates, and secularists are eager to open them and invite them in.
So be a wooden spoon Christian.
Your Christian engagement can be a simple as a wooden spoon. Decide to be who you are and just put one finger on it: do a little mental work and a little physical work.
The mental work is using the internet, just to find and print out the Ten Commandments, tape them on the wall, and set to work in a non-pressured way reading and eventually memorizing them.
Look up a simple Grace Before Meals, print it out, and say it before eating your lunch on Sunday. Bingo, you have obeyed the Fourth Commandment.
If you want to go further, get a small stainless steel cross on a chain on Amazon and wear it.
There. That wasn't so hard.
Over time you will know what you want from this. Don't expect to walk into a building and have it draped around your shoulders. It's about you at home.
And there is no need to be mean to anybody.
We have NO IDEA how long we will live; be prepared to meet your Maker even if as one of his stupider creations. At least you will have something, something simple.
A wooden spoon takes time to carve, and is a useful tool.
Christian art from the old days is famous; google it using Google Images, and print it out in color and tape it to your wall. Wikipedia will tell you all about it.
You are stuck being who you are, you can be a good specimen of what you are, and no, you can't decide it might be fun to be something else. Just be yourself, as the phrase is. Atheism is: 1) hurt from disappointment and betrayal, or 2) an exaggerated faith in a revered high school science teacher who knew little, or 3) a deep abiding faith in one's own genius as a skeptic.
None of that is as valuable as a properly made wooden spoon.
Freak out your friends. Wear a small cross. Say you aren't kidding. Endure the teasing. Smile. Get the girl, because girls love a noble guy standing up for his principles.
