We should be working to become closer to Russia, not adversaries or constant belligerents with each other. They actually are no threat to us, and we are none to them.

I see nothing strange about this. Mutually beneficial cooperation is a good thing. We worked with them to get a solution in the Turkey / Kurds mess.
