Remember the 2009 protests against the Islamofascist regime in Iran and the footage of college students being gunned down in the street? Maybe Trump is doing something more subtle and smart than trying to start a war with the murderous regime: encouraging an internal toppling by a population (esp. of young people) who long for freedom.
(Remember the strong support Obama gave to the protesters in 2009? Yeah, neither do I. A couple of tepid press conferences long after the protests started... Hussein was too much in bed with the regime to make more than some perfunctory "this is disturbing" remarks. No Iranian Spring for you!)
P.S. Joel Pollack at Breitbart has a similar take:
"Killing Soleimani a Message of Support to Iranian People"
Iraq is 1/3 Sunni and 2/3 Shiite; I don't know how many of the Shiites are pro-Iran. But the two countries were at war during most of the 80s, so national hatreds may override religious affiliations. There seems to be a general discontent among Iraqis with the current Shiite government, which IS (cautiously) pro-Iran. So there could be a toppling there, too.
A lot of pieces in play in Trump's 4D chess game!

It's almost like Obama purposefully helped to overthrow secular governments in islamic countries and replace them with islamic governments but places trying to overthrow islamic governments got no help.
Yes, that was what the Arab Spring was really about. Under Mubarak and Qaddafi Egypt and Libya were stable countries. Qaddafi warned that he was the only thing standing between Europe and mass migration from Africa. Hmmm... Killing him served lots of purposes. Let's see, putting Al Qaeda in power, funneling weapons to ISIS, creating chaos and cultural destruction in Europe. No wonder the Witch cackled so smugly on TV: "We came, we saw, he died."
Good take. I never did understand why in the AF they went after Qaddafi, he was never a threat and kept a lot of bad shit in check. But I knew something was evil about it when Hillary, Val Jarret, and Samantha Power were wanting his head on platter.

And Trump's announcement of the Mani offing also included an encouraging message to the Iranian people.
Brilliant insight. Thank you for this comment!
Thank YOU! A lot of Iraqis are also celebrating: Pompeo just Tweeted a video https://twitter.com/SecPompeo/status/1212955403077767168.
