Obscene if true although I haven't personally verified. UPDATE 12/30/2019: I have now personally verified the article's headline; see bottom of comment for details.
HOWEVER, this is small potatoes to the TENS OF BILLIONS in refundable tax credits given to illegals; this I have personally verified (you can, too, via treasury.gov). Note that REFUNDABLE TAX CREDITS can be received without paying ANY tax (ie, like a negative tax). It has been going on and growing for years.
Per two separate official Treasury Department audits of the IRS, publicly available on the Treasury website (https://www.treasury.gov/tigta/oa_auditreports_fy11.shtml), the federal government paid illegal immigrants nearly $1 billion of refundable tax credits in tax year 2005, growing to $4.2 billion in tax year 2010, and $6.8 billion in tax year 2011.
The first audit was published in 2011, and its title was “Individuals Who Are Not Authorized to Work in the United States Were Paid $4.2 Billion in Refundable Credits.” How can the title be any clearer? Yet around the 2014 amnesty debate, the media dazzled us with the charade that amnesty could entitle illegals to refundable tax credits going forward and up to three years in arrears. That charade was only the tip of the iceberg – illegals had ALREADY been receiving billions of dollars of refundable credits!
The second audit was published in 2012, and its title was “Substantial Changes Are Needed to the Individual Taxpayer Identification Number Program to Detect Fraudulent Applications.”
As of 2016, I was not aware of any further audits on this topic, so by that time the annual number was likely greater than $10 billion.
UPDATE 12/30/2019:
The article's headline is 100% supported and clearly stated within the US Treasury Department audit of the IRS, "Substantial Changes Are Needed to the Individual Taxpayer Identification Number Program to Detect Fraudulent Applications", located at:
