Do it! If you haven't already, I recommend taking a train as one of your trips. Amtrak takes beautiful routes. Especially the line that goes from Sacramento to Chicago.

Also cross country tickets are also cheaper than short routes! Rooms are kind of expensive, but if you travel with your family it becomes cheap per person. However the seats are wider/more comfier than first class airplane seats so I just sleep in economy.
