There's a certain bit of irony in what is happening. So Spain decided to quash Catalonia's referendum and jailed its leaders. Now the top EU court says you cannot do that because at least one of the leaders was actually elected MEP, thus diplomatic immunity! Furthermore, Catalonia's independence, even though it makes sense from the economic point of view (they make most money but have to give it up to be shared with Spain), was actually driven by leftists! Yeah, I know, it makes no sense but here it is.
Honestly Catexit makes sense (wealthy nation with a unique history and language), but Spain exiting the EU... much less so. Spain doesn't have a huge 'cultural enrichment' because it is rather poor to begin with, and those fighting-age African males wouldn't go there anyway, preferring Germany and Norway.
Spanish here. It makes a lot of sense that the left backs Catalonian (and Basque and Galician) independence because they hate Spain. Just think about the left in the US: they hate the US. That's all.
They hate Spain very much also because it's the only country in the world that, through history, was able to defeat both Islam and the Communists (during the Reconquista and the Civil War, respectively). Spain also disseminated Christianity and Western civilization through the world (yes, I know my Country did a mistake fighting Protestantism so hard, no one's perfect).
Spain is a perfect hate-generating machine for leftists.
