The EU was a terrible idea from the start. Too many different cultures, too many different languages, too many different economies.

Sure, certain things early on made some sense like easier trade, and being able to cross borders without being strip searched. But those easy going days are long gone.

The unified currency is the enabler of all these problems.

Putting a country like Greece on a stronger currency than they would otherwise have is like giving an irresponsible teenager a high-limit credit card.

The strength of a nation’s currency should reflect the productivity of the nation.

Financially weaker countries will, eventually, tire of stronger countries dictating financial policies to them.

Putting a country like Greece on a stronger currency than they would otherwise have is like giving an irresponsible teenager a high-limit credit card.

That's not the problem with the currency, the problem for countries like Greece is they lost their own central bank which removes their ability to print money and issue their own bonds. This removes their ability to control their own debt spending and rather than giving a teenager a credit card, it took away a lot of their ability to borrow and devalue. Eventually that would fuck Greece as it had in the past but still better than what the EU and IMF has imposed on them for a long time.

Further to this, within their own borders using the Drachma might have created a internationally poor nation but not one that couldn't function well in itself, sure imports would not have been great but they could have kept the cost of living lower and the benefits of tourism was much higher than it is today.

The strength of a nation’s currency should reflect the productivity of the nation.

Correct.

Financially weaker countries will, eventually, tire of stronger countries dictating financial policies to them.

Again, correct, the Greek are long since tired of forced austerity. They elected a far-left government in 2015 led by Syriza that pledged to end EU imposed austerity, instead they caved to the EU and implemented even more austerity. This year the far-left were booted out and a center right government is now running Greece.

Why is this done and who does it benefit? Germany mostly, by having these PIGS economic basket case countries in the Euro, it helps keep the Euro low and hence Germany's exports more affordable to the rest of the world.

Oh fuck yeah, they kept losing wars so created the EU to take over instead.

Excellent analysis. The “teenager with a credit card” example doesn’t quite capture the complexities and problems of losing your central bank.

The crazy part is that these countries lost their central banks without having fired a shot.

It’s a good warning for all.

I know you know this but I just want to stress that the EU started solely as a free trade block, the EEC. It did work quite well, the unified currency and then political union came 20+ years later, that has been a disaster to all but a few large members.

The EU is destroying cities and cultures. In the EU people can move between countries without visas. So all the rich people and smart people are moving out of low economic cities into larger cities like Madrid. Athens, once great, is a complete shithole and nearly every street has graffiti. Immigrants from Africa, war-torn, and impoverished countries are pouring into Athens and other accessible countries. The EU is an economic, and culture-killing disaster.

they are jealous of the united states and want a system like that over there of "countries working together"

but it was NEVER EVER set up as one collective country. the countries are NOT "states" within a whole country. the United States IS however. each state is like their own little country, BUT we are still bound from a foundation of ONE country.

the eu will never work

Borders need to come back.

Not strip-searching, of course.

But this gliding from one country to another without so much as a how do you do is bizarre and unsettling.
