Someone would have to prove he lied and he could just plead the 5th when asked to provide the proof he saw.

Also, not so much in an interview, but during debates and hearings, i believe congress has special immunity for slander/libel, its why they can call someone a racist or any number of vile things without being afraid of retaliation.
