Can someone ELI5 what the purpose of this manipulation is? I don't understand how this is helpful to those who's names have been misspelled.

I don’t know this to be fact but if it is typed as “CORNEY” and you do a broad search for “COMEY”, the “CORNEY” results won’t show up.
