Is it Karma, or God, or Kek--some punishment visited upon them, I don't know from where or by whom? I'm an agnostic, but the Orc-like ugliness of their type--it IS a type, and the gargoyle ugliness is as a sign--and the Trump Curse, and the way their plans blow upon their faces, and the grotesque symptoms...I don't know, it almost makes me believe something Higher is involved here.
