There will be repercussions at the polls, IMO, but your point stands. This is an unprecedented assault on the Constitution--separation of powers--and several Amendments (Trump's due process rights). But a huge loss in 2020 would set its own precedent that staging a pseudo-legal coup against a duly elected president is a very bad move politically. And of course it's all about politics for the Dems. Basically they're just chimping out and throwing their feces against the wall hoping something will stick. It won't.

Also, they may also find the tables turned on them if (when) the articles land with a clunk on the Senate floor.
