Not sure if joke or not, but in the UK people use the term "Asian" for people of South Asian ancestry (Pakistanis, Indians, Bangladeshis and Sri Lankans)
For east Asians, since we can't say "Oriental", we call them "Asians.. but like Chinese Asian, not paki Asian". I'm pretty sure that's what it says on the census too.
Yeah it's really not great semantically. Asia's way too large and diverse a place to just use a term like 'Asian', however, I fear the government likes using vague terms like that so we aren't exposed to the real trends.
